Default Windshield replacement

Advice on windshield replacement with HUD, should i go through Safelite or dealer. Will change only OEM

The windshield got chipped on the top while i was changing targa top, still not sure how the heck it happened and now it cracked. Took it to safelite and they says it needs to be replaced and cannot be repaired, quoted 1200

Thanks

Check around. I got mine changed at home with a GM part w/HUD for $1000. Got the name and number from a shop that worked on Corvettes. That was a couple of years ago. Prices may have come down by now.

Get your insurance to pay for it. I have never had issues using Safelite.

Safelite is fine..... had them replace windshields in two C4s, a C6, the CTS-V Cadillac, and a C7....

Contact either your dealership for an OEM replacement, your local high end body shop, or an independent shop (not a chain store) for OEM. If memory serves, GM still uses Carlex for glass.

I wouldn't put Safelite's aftermarket in brand in.

Safelite has done good work on my cars before. Not sure if they will do it, but see if they can use an OEM part for the replacement.

Safelite can put OEM HUD , not going for aftermarket on the vette.

Not every insurance company will cover it and besides, if you have a $1000 deductible, why bother. Safeflight is okay...but ask the dealer who they use...my dealer does NOT replace windshields. They use a local shop...OEM.

I did not go with Safelite but found an excellent glass shop that came out with two techs and replaced it with OEM glass in 45 minutes for $1000. My insurance is good and covered OEM glass even though it was more expensive.

Of course I got another chip a few months later

Went this route, getting it repaired from a local shop recommended by dealer , they are providing OEM part as verified with dealer too. Will let you know how it goes

Their quote is 200 bucks cheaper than safelite who was providing aftermarket part.

...windshields are not under collision but comp. and therefore you pay a (small?) deductible, get it replaced, don't need to deal with points used to raise your rates....

My comp is $100 deduc and my rates were never raised while replacing two windshields over a two year period.
Not going to pay $1,000 out of my pocket when the cost of my insurance is not hit.

Oh I tried to stay out of this but.......where the heck did u come up with this BS
I hate when people who have no idea what they are talking about post crap like this
GM never used Carlex ... Carlex is the remnants of Carlite , FORD'S X glass company
C7 OEM glass is made by AGC glass Corp
And its the same glass you would get if you requested it from Safelite
SAFELITE ,does not have a brand ... they sell all major brands ....

There are two part number configurations for automotive glass

NAGS and OEM , almost all glass shops use the NAGS number when quoting and if you asked for an OEM from Safelite they then quoted you an OEM using the NAGs equivalent part number

I would not be so sure Safelite was NOT providing you the OEM , I think that there might be just some confusion over the part numbering system that is used by glass and insurance companies . Both use NAGS ( National Auto Glass ) part numbering system because of the standardized numbering and pricing over the OEM part numbering and not so standardized pricing

Good Luck with your install
