Default A8 question

An A8 question. When I get off the gas then step back on, the car free wheels than catches. It feels like a bad u joint . Is this a symptom of the trans failing?

Could you explain "free wheels" in a bit more detail?

Free wheeling = coasting.

I believe he's talking about the A8 transmission and not the C8 model

OP, are you experiencing any other of the below A8 converter issue systems?

(1) - Surging and Lugging - Your car can't seem to maintain constant speed.

(2) - Shuddering - Feels like you are running over a rough road when you are on a smooth road. Comes and goes without warning.

(3) - Vehicle Lurches

(4) - Slow to go into gears including reverse.

(5) - Gears don't shift easy.

(6) - Strange Noises - Clicking or revving.

(7) - Gears Slipping - Loss of acceleration.

(8) - Overheating.

(9) – RPMs jumping up and down slightly at constant highway speed.

My brow furrowed on that response. Something on the order of "Say what?"

Are we talking early C7 like 2015 or early 2016 production and is it between gears (first and second) going slow like in a parking lot or going around a corner??? If so, then just one of the quarks of the early A8's. Your next issue will be "Garage Shift".....that's when you put it in gear first thing in the morning and it takes about 5 seconds for the TQ to fill and then BANG, it leaches forward chirping the tires and placing your head in the back seat!.....lots of fun!

Enjoy the ride.

I’m confused. Mines a 2019 C7 with the A8 automatic transmission. They fail. Just wondering if my jerking is a symptom of a failure coming?

Ding Ding Ding Da Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner! The A8 was failed before they even started producing it. Defective by design. Back in 2015 I would be driving and the car would just start revving the transmission would just fully disconnect from the rear wheels then all of a sudden it would drop in with a huge bang and forward lurch. That transmission is a ticking time bomb.

There is a service bulletin for that delayed engagement in the morning. 16-NA-014. My 15 is going to the shop next week for the repair but as I am paying out of pocket I may just replace the entire TC.

Sorry guys. I just now saw these replies. The car is a 2019 GS that’s nearly stock. Just bolt ons. The car has 20k miles. I’ve never have a TQ go bad. Is this what they do? I have a Range and I never use eco mode. I guess just some bad luck.

None of these things. I felt the rpm’s rise and fall on the freeway just once when it was new. I’ll keep this list. Well done. Thank you.

If practical, I'd start by putting everything back to stock and see what happens. That would be more important if the problems started soon after you did the mods or installed the Range.
Lots of strange interactions between all the electronics.

Another possibility- if the car is in Drive and you get on the gas hard for a couple of seconds, the tranny thinks you are suddenly acting like a racer and it will avoid upshifting for a few seconds after you get off the gas. It feels like something is wrong if you're not used to it. I have not tried getting back on the gas during that pause before upshift.

Does your A8 have the latest fluid (Jan 2019 or thereabouts)? If it has the old fluid, you get a free flush with the new stuff, just by asking.
With the new fluid, the A8 has been working well for most people. We have about 20 of them in our club ranging from 2015 to 2019, most people are very pleased and have had no problems or minor problems fixed quickly. We've got 30k miles on our 2017 A8, works good but we got the new fluid last year just as a prevention.

Great response. Thank you. I haven’t had the slow to engage thing yet. When it freewheeles, it’s at very slow speed. Only first gear. When I step on the throttle, I do get some slow to respond moments. It seems confused. I bought my 19 in May of 2018. In my club, we have a number of new C7’s too. All flavors including a ZR1 and 3 Calloway's. No one has had trans trouble. I’ll be the first. I’ll go to the dealer and get that flush.
