Good morning and I hope I am in the right place. I am on my 10th vette starting with a 1957 purchasesd in 1961 when I got out of the Navy and I pulled out the 283 and put in a modified 327 but then had to sell it when our children arrived. I had to wait until 1979 when I purchased my second one.. I will be 80 on the end of August 2020 and my C8 is supposed to arrive then (I put my deposit on it Sept 2019 and still waiting) I live in Discovery Bay CA which is about 60 miles east of San francisco.
I have a problem with my 2015 C7 Z51 top. It constantly makes noise at any bump in the road. I have used evey type of lubricant I can find and while some reduce the noise, none of them cure it completly. /does anyone have a cure for this?
About a week after buying my 2014 in 2018 the roof started squeaking. Its a real common problem in these cars. I suffered through it for about a year or so before really trying to fix it. I ended up just applying a very tiny amount of grease (I have redline CV grease, but I think any decent bearing grease will work) on the small square area where the pads on the locking levers live when they're fully closed. You don't have to take the roof off, just move the sun shades out of the way and undo the latches. I have the grease in a little syringe and needle and just apply a tiny amount, and then close the latches. You could use a small q tip also.
To see if this is really your problem, open and close both latches and see if the noise temporarily goes away. Or just drive a short distance with one latch undone. If the noise goes away this is your problem and the grease should hopefully fix it. Good luck!
I purchased and installed a set of o rings gaskets that go on the pins of the roof, the GM part number is 22994154. There was another thread that mentioned these gaskets, I called them o rings but they are more domed shape and has stopped the squeaking so far.
I use a small amount of dielectric grease and wipe it around on the seal of the top. Next I had to tighten the rear latch with one turn on the screw. Once a year I remove the top and use the grease. I thought I had squeaks and rattles in my dash and the back of the car and after chasing these multiple annoying things around the car with my wife riding around in the back I finally took off the top and did the things I mention and no more noise. Each and every noise I had came from the top. Tightening the set screw at the back latch really helped. Two turns was too much so I backed it off some.
Hope this helps.
My approach to the constant click/ squeak over every bump or imperfection in the road (enough that the car squeaked twice a minute), was tightening the pins in the top which were any were from a 1/4 turn to 1/2 turn loose, then by a post I saw here in the forum was to completely wipe down all rubber seals in the top and doors and treat it with this 303 lubricant/conditioner. The car hasn't made a squeak since in almost a year.
I tried lubricating all the rubber but that didn't work. Then I bought a cheap set of 0-rings in a hardware store which solved the problem. I carry all the ones I didn't need in the car if I need to replace either.
I wasn't sure how to unlock the rear hook to turn it - or does it turn without loosening anything?.
