Default Electronically limited?

Was looking at something on the computer and it said that the 15 Z51 (and I presume other years) were electronically limited to 186 MPH. Granted I'm not going near that speed but why does a performance car get limited. It has the tires, handling & brakes to move out.

I do not remember seeing that my 07 Z06 was computer limited or my 05 or even my 98.

Just curious, if that is true, what would be the highest the car could go.

All our cars are electrically limited and they are also limited by Cd. You are RPM limited and speed limited.

Non-Z06 will probably top out around 180>184.
A member on this forum documented a stock '17 GS hitting 180mph on a 3-mile runway.

Most are limited based on the tire rating..

According to the chart below, our 2017 Z51 A8 would hit the rev limiter in 6th at 188 mph, so you could call that electronically limited.
But in 7th or 8th, the redline speed would be much higher but you couldn't make enough HP to get there.
My understanding is that there is no actual mph speed limit programmed into the car.
Somewhere I read that the tires are rated for "over 186" but can't confirm that.

Thanks for the answers. I kind of thought that tires might have been the biggest reason.

97 up corvettes and camaros have had a speed limiter in program. For the fun of it I dropped mine to 100mph and sure enough it kicked in. Its not new. Your tires or hp will make it tough to reach those speeds in a reasonable amount of time.

Basically your odds of hitting a bad bump, rut, abother car etc goes way up. You could do a hero run for maybe 20 mins max before you run out of gas. Your tires will also be done after that

Related - you would need a LONG straight section of road... like a salt flat, the runway for the shuttle, or Texas

All cars for the last 25 or so years have electronic max speed limiters.

Iceaxe. "Lived" there for over 30 years. Wish I could go now! And, to the topic of the thread, you won't have to worry about it going that fast, anyway.

It sounds like a lot of fun on the salt. Not really concerned about the C7 top end. Would like to see my 3.2 liter 6 cyl turbodiesel sedan do 145 mph, it's cruising speed, right out of the box. Not sure I'd want to run it @ 161 mph, it's rated top end.

The ZR-1 is limited to 210 mph, due to the speed rating of the cup 2 tires.

Majority of cars (even new cars) are limited by drag (wind resistance) or gearing, RPM. Some seem to be “safety” (lawsuit) related. BMW/Mercedes, some models, come to mind.

I believe there is an informal agreement among the German makers, and perhaps other countries in Europe, to limit most of the cars to 250 kph, which is 155 mph.
Even the M3 had a limiter at some point, not sure about today.

My GT500 was speed limited to 155 mph. I removed the limit with my tuner. Fastest I had it to was 161 mph and since the GY tires were W-rated (168 mph), I did not want to go any faster.

My Gen6 Camaro SS convertible was also limited to 155 mph or maybe 135 mph, I don't recall which now. I also removed the limit with my tuner. Tires are Y-rated (186 mph). But, since it is a convertble, I just cruise in it. I've never reached 100 mph, even on acceleration ramps.

I haven't checked the ECM in the Z06 yet. The tires (MPSS) are (Y) rated so the tires are good for 186+ mph.
