Is there a navigation update available, and if so, is there any cost involved?
Nav is still showing local turn that was redone couple years ago as “recalculating”.
It came out in the spring. I believe it was under $200. You can order online and they will send a mini thumb drive. Takes about a hour to load into your system.

Any idea how to find out what version is currently in the car?
IIRC it's usually around $100. The real question is why bother when Android Auto and Carplay are available, free and 100x better than the factory unit.

No Car Play
No Android Auto
No PDR
I have a 2014.

That's debatable. The Navigation system is fully integrated to work with the HUD and offers an added degree of safety and convenience over CarPlay. Most of the important info that is displayed of the center Navigation screen is projected on the HUD. I don't believe CarPlay offers this level of integration. I am sure the map update was at least $150.
My experience with both the Ford Sync and GM MyLink nav system upgrades has led me to "update" every three or so years...
In BOTH systems I ponied up the $150+ for the CD/USB stick and installed the "new and improved" maps to find that major road modifications (I-15 in Las Vegas and CA 168 in Fresno) was not included in either system at least two years after the construction was completed... Was not impressed, and when I upgrade again will watch for the end of the season when the "new, improved" data cost is reduced to about a Benjamin... YMMV, but Caveat Emptor
Meanwhile, Waze, Siri and Google Maps work well.
Maybe you should QUOTE the response so we ALLLLLL know who you are talking to? Just a thought.
Elmer
P.S. I bet you know who I responded to didn't you!
Don't cha think that if I didn't specifically quote a person but gave a direct answer to the initial question posed by the thread starter, that I wasn't speaking to some random another guy who's only response at the time was about something that had nothing to do with my response that perhaps, just perhaps, I wasn't speaking to nor responding to that other random guy (read YOU)?!? I mean I *thought* that you'd be smart enough to figure that out. Perhaps I was wrong and if so, my apologies...
OEM NAVs are never "up to date" no matter how recent they are. Waze on the other hand gets road updates ever 48 hours. So I run Waze and just use the stock NAV as backup in areas where cell coverage is spotty.

^^This is the truth. To the OP... don’t be surprised if even after updating the built in nav, it still doesn’t have the roads that you are currently missing.

Easier to use a Navigation system that is closely integrated with the HUD. I never have to take my eyes of the road. Something you do not want to do when your cruising along at 80 or even at 45 MPH in heavy traffic.

Or ditch Waze and use Google Maps which allows you (and reminds you) to download offline maps so you can still navigate in those spotty areas...

Because I don’t have unlimited data plan, nor do I need one.

See above.......
Update is currently $99, but if it is still no better than the current one as some say is likely, I guess I’m gonna deal with the factory loaded version. (That is after I have time to check current version)
I have done a factory NAV update and it’s still marginal. Compared to the functionality of a Garmin, it’s poor. The only advantage it has over a smartphone app is that it’s not limited to cellular service. Sure, downloading a route in Google Maps can be good if you lose line-of-site of a cell tower, but it’s no match for a true SATNAV when you divert off your intended route.

Just an FYI - you don't need unlimited data plan for Android Auto - for that matter you don't need data at all for Google Maps, but you do for WAZE.. At home or anywhere you have WIFI connection, you can download map(s) Offline of the area you're travelling to and you can call up the map anytime/anywhere and search for anything you need.. As with any GPS, Google Maps does not require an internet connection. Go to Google Maps website and they will explain it all. Very user friendly. I can also easily send maps to my phone from my home computer. WAZE does. I have had factory NAV in my 2 previous Vettes - the only advantage of the factory NAV is it is available in HUD. My last Vette, my home was not recognized. I ordered the update and it still didn't recognize my home. Luckily for me, my memory has turned to mush and I can find my home w/o NAV. Google Maps is updated every 30 days (and will take me home if my memory goes). I do not have unlimited data on my cell phone, but I have never had a need to use mobile data. Check it out before needlessly spending money on a GM NAV update.
