Yep, when I got my plates 6 or 7 years ago for my C6 I had to apply, have up to three options and then they came back and said here is what you get. It was the third option I picked. Colorado is weird on this stuff.
In NYC you do it all online but it still took over 2 months to get the plates If it's taken you know on the spot the only rub is that the plate has to have one number
But really, if the state is that high that they can't put together a website to check to see if your vanity plate is available then I say they should be high enough not to care about duplicates!
