Ethanol isn't an issue, one way or another, leaded gas is what will kill a cat. Not that I think it's even available, in Canada or the US anymore. Even when it was, the nozzle was to big to fit in a car requiring unleaded gas.
I just got back from a Philly to NYC trip - with the traffic by the holland tunnel, it took me over 20 minutes to go 2 miles
Even after a lengthy no traffic drive on the turnpike (similar to my ride to NYC), my return trip MPG wound up 40% of what it was for my trip going to NYC
So I can certainly see how MPG could be 50% (or worse) when driving mostly in traffic as compared to more highway driving
I had grown up in Brooklyn, there are some parts where the traffic is a mess
