Check with your insurance carrier. They may have service equivalent to AAA and should be cheaper since you are a policy holder. If not,. AAA over OnStar.
I second the comment on getting the AAA gold, the default towing mileage is a joke.
Lastly if you can determine the local police department, call their non emergency line, as I understand it, the police have priority access to towing services.
If you own a motorcycle and join the American Motorcycle Association (AMA), you get free roadside assistance for all your vehicles, which include motorcycles, cars, trucks, motorhomes (RV's), and trailers. You only get three service calls a year for non-motorcycles for the free plan. They have a Plus service for $35. It covers up to 35 miles of towing and you can use it once a week for each type of event, and covers everything AAA does. I have AAA and AMA, plus the roadside assistance I get from my insurance company and credit cards.
Curious - I cancelled Onstar after the trial, but my window sticker says I have 5 years roadside assistance. Does anyone know what that covers?
I believe it will cover a tow back to the closest dealer. It covers a limited amount of miles, if more you pay the difference. It’s probably in the manual.
Just checked, page 335 in manual. Lock out service, fuel, flat tire service. ( no spare so no help here.). Tow.

Onstar cellular is more powerful than a hand held cell phone.
I had originally thought they were using satellite technology until I looked it up and saw it was Verizon cellular. I guess they would have a larger antenna and can push out more watts than a cellphone.
We have three Fords that use Sync. To get the same features as OnStar, you have to link your cellphone to the vehicle to access their travel service for directions or emergency's. I have never activated OnStar in my Corvette. I also have never been in any location outdoors where my AT&T phone couldn't get a signal to make a call, and I have traveled through 46 States. But I have lost data access out in the desert or on lonely highways in Wyoming though.
I keep OnStar. AAA cannot slow car down if it is stolen, and I can track my vehicle with the phone. I can also unlock the car with my phone when the keys are not in my pocket.

We just finished a week-long driving trip around the National Parks in Utah. A bummer that we had to fly out there and use a rental car instead of using the Corvette like we've done before.
Between canyons and distant boonies we traveled, I'd say that at least a quarter of the time was spent without cellphone contact. We use Verizon and they usually have good service.
