My black 2014 M7 has the Z51 package and has the black wheels. From a few steps back they look fine but up close the leading face of the "spokes" are getting some road rash. If someone has had their wheels resprayed, was it worth it? What cost would I be looking at if I had it done? I know prices can vary some. Does the tire have to come the wheel during the process? Thanks for your input.
well I resprayed
my own ,they were a silver color ,and sprayed them a black satin ,,if for some reason they dont hold up then I will get them power coated ,I have about $25 into them doing it myself!!
Many years ago I had my OEM C5 Z wheels painted by a national wheel business called Wheels of America, or some such in Dallas. They did a beautiful job. I see no reason any competent paint shop wouldn't do as well.
If it were me, I'd probably have them powder coated because it's more durable. The downside is that it would be quite a bit more expensive and probably require a couple of weeks of "down time" for your car. Bills17n72, those wheels look great.
I have been doing research on spraying my wheels, I am going to go from black to silver. Seems the key to doing it right is the same with any kind of painting, it is in the prep work. If the wheels are cleaned and lightly scuffed then cleaned again with alcohol and are free of dust and contaminants, should be able to spray the color you want the wheels to be easily. If I do it, will probably use Duplicolor or another good quality wheel paint base coat but will use the Eastwood 2K clear coat that has the hardener in it. Think it will provide a harder finish and will hold up longer. Plenty of video's on how to tape and prep wheels to paint them with the tires still on the wheels.

Powdercoating is more expensive, but also more durable. Downtime depends on the service provider's workload.
Hey guys thanks for all the great information. The down time doesn't bother me because it won't be back on the road until late March at the earliest due to Wonderful Winterland of Minnesota. I appreciate the help.

Are the factory wheels powder coated?
We used factory wheels on our 2001/2006/2009/now 2017, and we went over 100k miles on the '09. I'm lazy about washing the wheels, they get coated with Z51 brake dust and look absolutely awful. But a good wash makes them look almost new again, just a very few small stone chips and nothing more.
My guess is that the factory wheels are painted, but I could be wrong. I've had tons of stuff powder coated over the years and it's much more durable than paint. I also think it has a smoother finish than paint on things like brake calipers. I've never had wheels powder coated.

I just had my wheels powder coated Gloss Black! Dropped car off in morning, and picked up next afternoon! $750 included demounting, mounting, and balancing! I'm sure you can find a good wheel repair operation in your area!

I had my HRE RS207M forged monobloks done in (a close approximation of) Carbon Flash by a local shop I trust. Cost was $600, including dismount, remount, and balance. Details available here.

Cerakote works great and will last. Use the type that doesn't require an oven. Preparation is the key. A pint of paint is less than 100 if you know how to spray and have a spray gun it's really easy. Just be sure the prep is done well.
