Are the cabin filters bi-directional. Dont see an arrow on them. Does the air flow from the plenum by the window into the car?
I believe the air comes in directly from the engine bay. In the summer months without the AC on you will get very hot if you turn the fan on as air is pulled into the cabin from the engine bay but if your turn on the recirculation button less heat will come in to the cabin. I did this and its true. The air is coming from around the plastic cover that covers the air cabin filter. The cover does not fit snuggly and is not a sealed cover. This is located on the bulkhead/firewall on the passenger side near the coolant tank.
Do you have a pic of this inlet? There have been posts here on CF that said air is pulled from the engine bay.
I’ll send you a pic in a day or so in the meantime all you have to do is walk out to your C7 and look at the vent under the right side windshield /wipers. That is the inlet cabin air vent.

It's way too cold for playing with toys now. But seriously, if you try turning on just your ventilation fan on during a hot summer day the heat inside the cabin will increase. It's almost as if the heat was turned on even though it was not. Now turn on the recirc button and the heat will diminish. The vent you mentioned is very close to the cabin filter cover. They're neighbors.

Critical item on all cars made since the advent of interior air management is the cowl seal whose sole function is to prevent engine fumes from entering the cabin air intake

The recirc button works effectively on occasions when I notice fumes in the cabin with windows up. That's just a flapper valve somewhere in the duct work. The cowl seal will work for air coming from the engine bay as the seal separates the engine compartment from the air inlet. However, what happens in reality is that the air cabin filter cover is not a tightly sealed cover. Fumes and hot air can flow through to the cabin filter because the cover leaks. The cabin filter cover is open to the engine bay and the cowl can not help. As I mentioned earlier you can try testing this yourself. Must be another GM "design flaw". Location below shows location of vent air inlet.

How the mice get in is a great question. My guess is they do not come in through the intake, but rather go backwards up a floor vent from within the car.
But given how mice can get through very small openings, they can take pretty much any route they would like.
There is a photo on the C7 forum somewhere of an owner displaying a nest resting on his air cabin filter. The owner was in the process of removing the filter for replacement. I imagine ingress would most likely come from the cover that shields the air cabin filter. The only other possibility the mouse came through the battery cover into the cabin then entered into the vent duct located either under the seat or through the vent outlet on the dash. Are there any other vent outlets located inside the cabin?

Hate to resurrect an old thread but I changed mine earlier tonight and I had a big old mouse nest. This makes me feel a little better because I’m concerned they chewed some wires up or did other damage.
I also ran into the same issue as the OP. No sign of a directional arrow on the OEM replacement. The one I took out had the lettering upside down so just did the same.
