I have just purchased and programmed a second key fob for my 2014 Vert. I want to put the second fob in the trunk with the battery removed and just hide the mechanical key somewhere on the car.
My 2 question are:
1. With the doors locked will the mechanical key open the trunk so I can get my second fob?
2. If yes, will the alarm go off when the trunk is opened.

So I guess that once the trunk is opened I need put the fob together ASAP in order to shut off the alarm. Opening the drivers door with the pull handle won’t shut it off.
You might also try putting the fob into the pocket on the steering column and start the car that way. You don't need a working battery for that method. I don't know if this will disarm the alarm, but it's easy enough to try.
Aluminum Foil? Where did you hear that would work? Don’t want to put the key on the car somewhere as there’s no really easy place to get to and there’s always the chance the key holder could get Jared loose. I’ve actually had the magnets stay on the car and the folder come off. Also there’s not many easy places on the vette (steel) that the holder can be attached to. If you correct about the aluminum foil, getting into the trunk is easy with the key and the fob if battery is still in it, I would be able to cancel the alarm pretty quick. The mechanical key being as small as it is would be easy to hide. Key ingredient here, aluminum foil.
I wrapped mine in foil when I did my test. Didn't feel like taking the fob apart. You could also get one of those anti-RFD / faraday bags on amazon if you want something a little more durable.
We've had a spare fob with battery, wrapped in aluminum foil hidden in the trunk of our Corvette (s) for the last 15 years. I test it every couple of years when I change the fob battery, the foil totally blocks the signal.
There are places outside the car where you can hide the key and it won't come off, we've had that for 15 years also and the Tech who works on the car still hasn't found it. It's not convenient, but secure and hidden, I can get the key without getting filthy.
As you can imagine, I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you...
If you have your Vette set up to enable remote control via the MyChevrolet app (locking/unlocking) on your smartphone ( iPhone works great ) it wouldn't be necessary to hide a key as long as you have a working car battery. Opening this way does not set of the alarm. It might even give an owner a warm fuzzy if they had both remote control and hidden key.
