Does anyone have experience with these wheels? I know generally people think the Z51 wheels are good and the Grand Sport and Z06 wheels have issues. But what's the general opinion on the 7 Split Spoke Wheel that GM sells at their dealerships? They are about $750-$800 each. Also would I need to buy the TPMS too or would the ones from my Z51 wheels work just fine as long as the wheels are the same size?
Some here have them. Nothing wrong with them, no known issues on the z51. My issue with these when I had my z51 was the identical stance as the other z51 wheel. That’s the only reason I didn’t go with them. I wanted something more aggressive.
Edit: TMPS/tires are all an exact fit. However, the price of $750 per is ridiculous. Another reason I didn’t go with those.
maybe I'm just cheap but my after market wheels were under $1000 for all four
I was also looking at the Black AR924s since they are about 1/3 of the price and I haven't heard any complaints about them.
Does the change in weight of the wheel impact anything?
The Split Spoke claim to be Forged which is usually a bonus but can cost quite a bit.
Dealers are notoriously "over-priced" on many things. Hence, it is usually worth checking other potential sources/vendors if the price is an issue (may not be). There are Forum wheel vendors and an ad in the C7 "Parts Wanted" section may produce something, as might watching the "For Sale" ads for a while. Just sayin'...
Does the change in weight of the wheel impact anything?
The AR924 weight less then OEM - well at least the stock chrome Z51 wheels I had. Lighter is always better: less rotational mass, less unsprung weight - technically the car will be more responsive. Will you personally notice the difference? Doubtful unless you are tracking the car (circuit or drag).
With wheels most people are going for style first, IE: they just like the looks. However due to the problems with GS / Z06 wheels cracking the focus changed to looking for strength. Victims of GM's crappy wheels will now gladly pay for a quality forged set. This GS / Z06 issue is primarily due to how wide the wheels are. Combined this with low profile, run-flat tires on a stiff suspension sports car and you are going to have problems.
However since the Z51 wheels are narrower they don't suffer from cracking so I wouldn't be super worried about wheel construction in this application. Of course any wheel can crack and some Z51 owners have had problems. If you want some cushion and extra safety margin do what I did - go down to 18/19s and increase the sidewall height of the tires.
If you want OEM wheels check with Bob at House of Wheels. He only charges about half of what the dealer does and includes shipping. HoW is in Parts for sale and vendor section
