Last night when I started my car the dash was normal except that the center of the display which is usually the speedometer was black. When I returned home I tried what I usually do when I encounter a computer glitch,-I turned off the engine and then restarted it. To my relief the speedo info was back as normal. I thought the problem was resolved except when I turned the engine off, only the speedo display remained, but did shut down when I opened the door. I wonder if this is the beginning of a new more serious problem.
Has any other forum member encountered this problem? Does any member have any idea as to the cause or fix?
It may be the battery? How old is the battery in the car?
I was suspecting the same thing. The battery is about 3 1/2 years old. I am planning to replace it soon. In the past I have replaced the battery after 4 or 5 years.
It’s definitely the battery, this happened to me last weekend. Pulling the old one out is not fun. Be sure the positive terminal is secured properly and tightened well when you put the new one in or you may have continued issues. I thought I had mine on tight but apparently it was a little cocked when I tightened it and the electrical gremlins were still playing. Once I figured this out and tightened everything was fine with the exception that it threw a check engine code I had to clear.

Yes. I used to wait until my batteries failed, and then replaced. Too inconvenient. So I just do it every 3 years. Inexpensive enough. You get a fresh new battery for the cost of four gas tank fills.
I checked my records and found I had replaced the battery in January 2019, less than 2 1/2 years ago, at a Chevy dealership. Is there a warranty on the battery? I made an appt. with Chevy for tomorrow morning. Pray for me.

They'll prorate it. If it was a 36 mo battery you would get a refund of 6 mos worth, or 17%.

Since an early "glitch" with my C5 (still naive enough then to think the dealer might have a clue), I have had an assortment of small issues come and go with both my Vettes. My C7 had what sounds to be something similar to yours--once--a few weeks ago, though I've not seen it since. One must consider the scale at which new chips are designed. Even nothing but occasional quantum vicissitudes might cause an issue.
(btw, If like the one mentioned in my C5, it hasn't happened since... in nearly 20 years )
