Default Shift boot question

I had removed my shifter some time ago and when I went to put it back on I had some issues with the half-twist thing so I then left it alone for a while (other projects and life stuff). I went back today and it aligned perfectly and snapped up into place easily. However the boot itself is no longer attached to the metal ring. I'm a bit puzzled as to how it became detached and how to reattach it.

I had so much trouble getting that ring off that I left it off. My boot sits under the **** just fine by itself.

Probably stating the obvious, but the boot should fit into the groove in the metal ring. What happens when you push the boot up into place? Does it seem looser on the ring, just not staying? I think there is a small piece of leather that is sewn into a place on the passenger side of the ring, but it doesn't really hold it in place. There is some kind of ring sewn into the boot, and it looks like yours still has the normal shape. It's kind of a PITA, but it should snap into place.

- That is essentially what I had thought. But when I was messing with it earlier the boot just keeps slipping off. It might be necessary for me to remove the shifter and boot to get a different angle on the relationship between the boot and the metal ring.

On my car, the passenger side of the ring has a spot where the boot was sewn in. Maybe you can glue/epoxy it back into place.
