Use your key to get into the rear hatch. The key goes into a cylinder above the rear license plate to the right..

Why can you not open the rear hatch with your key?

Out of curiosity, how old is the battery? Hope you get it sorted.

There are a lot of threads and videos on how to do it! If you have a Roadster, let us know. I have quite a few pictures on how I did mine.

Another newbie here, and having a problem with the key to open the hatch. It goes in OK and turns, but won't open the hatch. The battery is OK, I just wanted to make sure the key works. Any suggestions?

I'm turning it as far as I can. I'm afraid to put to much pressure on it. I don't want to break anything

Many folks have experienced a fail with trunk key hole. Get it checked out before you may need it.

Do not be a sissy, turn it and it'll pop. If not, then see the dealer.

Try pushing down on the hatch at the same time you turn the key. My key turned quite hard.

And when you go to pull the battery out do not forget to disconnect the vent hose - right side as I recall.

The tools you will need.

Long shank, flat blade, screwdriver, 10 & 13 millimeter sockets, battery strap, pry bar, gloves, flashlight, Sharpie, and tape to mark things. I put the sockets on different size ratchets so I always grab the right socket.

Note the Cubby Hole. There are three fasteners you need to loosen to get the carpet out.

These are the three fasteners that are underneath the support for the flap.

This is what it looks like as it is coming out.

The top schematic is for the fuse box. The bottom one is RPO Sticker. Make sure you take an image of both!

Ready to start

Pry the plastic cover off by hand.

It is important to have someone read the directions to you while you are doing this job. Lucy let me know exactly what to do!

Be very, very, careful with the small wire attached to the negative. It is delicate, and the home to many gremlins that will haunt you if you damage it, or forget to re-attach it.

I used a Bungy Cord to keep the negative out of my way.

Detaching the Positive side.

Positive connection held with another Bungy Cord.

Flat screwdriver to separate piece for detachment.

10mm Socket

Cords to keep the Pos and Neg cables away. They are very fond of home and keep trying to go back there.

This is what it looks like when the battery is out.

I always put the date I got it on the battery, so I will remember.

Be sure they give you the vent elbow when you pick up the battery. They are shipped separately and I had to go back to the Dealer for it!

Ready for installation.

This part is a real Pita.

The best way I found was to put it in at a 45 degree angle and kind of plop it in.

The spacing is tight.

I put the pads on the posts to protect them from oxidation. Make sure you wipe off the gel that gets on the connecting surfaces when you put the pads on, or you will have a bad connection.

This one gave me a little trouble going back on. A little lubricant took care of the problem

A peek under Door #1. This panel is not held on by anything except gravity.

When you put the carpet back in the trunk, it will hit several protuberances, and be difficult to get in. My sunshade is kind of stiff, so I put it down first, and slid the carpet over it. That worked. I then pulled the sunshade out'

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestion. When I pushed down on the lid, it opens.

Did you plug a keep-alive wire into your vehicle test plug under the dash?

The only thing you lose during a battery change is the window index. Just index the windows and you're good to go.

I am glad I was proactive in getting a new battery and let the dealer do this project.
