Default key fob

where is the best place to buy a key fob....just bought this car and only came with one. It is red, same color as car...not sure if it came like that or not. Havent figured out how to get the "key" out of it yet. Its a 2016 Z06. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know it has to be programmed too...is it possible to do this myself, or does a dealer have to do it with a computer?

There are quite a few places (Google or Amazon) that offer new fobs to replace those lost, no real problem there, anywhere from 60 to 100 bucks depending. But programming, that's the rub. There are ways to do it yourself but either due to the number of steps or my lack of skill (or both) when I tried to do it I just made things worse until, briefly it wouldn't recognize the original fob. It involves numerous buttons pressed, blinking tail lights, needing to complete steps in a narrow time window which I just could not overcome. I finally took it to my dealer/mechanic and he charged 90 bucks to do so and suggested (again consider the source) that I would be better off just going straight to him if it occurs again as I found out I could do more harm than good (see my efforts at plumbing repair to authenticate my lack of innate manual skills).....

When I bought mine from Carvana, I negotiated a second FOB and key since it only had one.
I mobile key guy came to my house, got everything done and left.
Yes he had a scan tool to program the Fob, and yes , you can get auto key shops to do it and save some scratch instead of using the dealer.
You will need the current FOB to program both.

Now having said that, I believe there is a way to program the fob yourself by inserting the key that's inside the Fob in the trunk cylinder and turning it 5 times or so and then program the fobs.
To do that without a scanner, takes an hour to do though.

Copied and pasted from Tech contributor Bill Dearborn on another thread :

From the 2015 Owner's Manual:

Programming with a Recognized Transmitter: A new transmitter can be programmed to the vehicle when there is one recognized transmitter.

1. The vehicle must be off and both the recognized and new transmitters must be with you.
2. Remove the key base from the recognized RKE transmitter.
3. Place the recognized transmitter in the cupholder.
4. Insert the vehicle key into the key cylinder above the license plate.
5. Open the hatch/trunk.
6. Turn the key five times within 10 seconds.
7. The DIC displays READY FOR REMOTE # 3 or 4, up to 8.
8. Place the new transmitter in the steering column transmitter pocket with the buttons facing up and the base toward the opening facing the passenger side.
9. Press the ENGINE START/ STOP button.
10. The DIC displays READY FOR REMOTE # 4 or 5, up to 8.
11. Press K on each newly programmed transmitter to complete the process.
12. To program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 8– 11. Press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for 12 seconds if programming is complete. Return the key base back into the RKE transmitter.

Programming without a Recognized Transmitter: If there are no currently recognized transmitters available, follow this procedure to program up to eight transmitters. This feature is not available in Canada. This procedure will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. The vehicle must be off and all transmitters to be programmed must be present.

1. The vehicle must be off
2. Remove the key from the transmitter and insert the vehicle key into the key cylinder above the license plate.
3. 3. Open the hatch/trunk.
4. Turn the key five times within 10 seconds. The DIC message displays REMOTE LEARN PENDING PLEASE WAIT.
5. Return key base back into the RKE transmitter.
6. Wait for 10 minutes until the DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN, then press the ENGINE START/ STOP button. The DIC reads REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
7. Repeat Step 6 two additional times. After the third time all previously known transmitters will no longer work with the vehicle. Remaining transmitters can be relearned during the next steps. The DIC display should now show READY FOR REMOTE #1.
8. Place the new transmitter in the steering column transmitter pocket with the buttons facing up and the base toward the opening facing the passenger side.
9. Press the ENGINE START/ STOP button. When the transmitter is learned, the DIC display will show that it is ready to program the new transmitter.
10. Remove the transmitter from the transmitter pocket and press Q or K on the transmitter. To program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 9– 10. When all additional transmitters are programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for approximately 12 seconds to exit programming mode.

Also keep in mind that if your car is a 2LT or 3LT, you might want to do a fresh programming from scratch by deleting all lost keys so you would have position 1 and 2 preserved with your memory functions.
If you just add a fob, it will take position #3 through #8 since the lost Fob still occupies the #2 memory.
The new Fob will not work with memory functions in this case.
My car is a 1LT, so that was not an issue, and I think the new Fob registered under #4 . So in my car's case, there are two lost remotes out there somewhere.

I had two fobs but wanted a third, just in case. Got the fob on ebay. Programmed it myself. Got the key duplicated at Ace Hardware, $10, including the blank key. Works great. They would not cut the blank that came with the fob. For $10, it was well worth it.

I bought a spare fob on the internet from a dealer parts store. You might also check the C7 parts for sale forum.

Note that you need the correct key fob. 2014/15 are not compatible with 2016/19.

Additionally, the number and function of the buttons must match:

There is NO programming in the fob. All programming is done on the car per instructions above. Think of it like pairing a bluetooth device, but maybe a bit more secure.

A locksmith can make a duplicate metal key.

If you happen to have the key code, there is a vendor on ebay that will provide a key cut to the code for under $20.

This is exactly the problem my wife & I had while we were driving our new-used 2017 convertible back from NY state. The previous owner had lost a remote at some point and just replaced and programmed it to be #3. After we got home to Oregon, I did the full reprogramming of both fobs so that we have fobs 1 & 2. Otherwise, if you have a 2LT or 3LT you're not enjoying full memory package benefits!
