My C6 does that unless you manually shift to 1st.My C7 is a manual so I can't tell you for sure.I would think it would be the same as they are both A6 transmissions.

Yes, the car will only shift down to 2nd unless you manually shift to 1st. You are able to take off while in 2nd gear with no problems. My 2014 does exactly the same thing.

From the responses so far, it seems the A6 shifts down to 2nd at a full stop and the A8 shifts down to first.
Given that this seems to be the fact, is there any benefit to shifting down to 1st in a complete stop? Or should I leave it in second since the car seems to want it that way?
Second is perfectly fine, and even recommended when there are traction issues such as sand, snow, ice.
I agree, but there is just something about starting out in 2nd, rather than 1st. I guess it's 50+ years of driving a manual transmission that forces me to slap it into 1st.
Understood, if at a complete stop. Otherwise second is better to keep moving, and in slippery conditions the less torque of second gear is best - even with a manual.
But I am like you, if completely stopped first it is.
