Default Heads Up

So I put two new A/S 3+ on front of Z 3 weeks ago. I hit a small pothole a few days back, I was concerned about the rim, which turned out to be fine. I found this yesterday. I was advised by the tire shop that run-flats tend to do this because of the hard side walls. I never lost pressure so I was probably driving on this a few days.

With a shorter sidewall, I can see where the tires on a Z could do that after a severe bump. But if the impact was not severe, I wouldn't think a good tire should do that. I have had runflats on a number of different Corvettes and have not experienced something like that happening even after hitting a pothole.

In any case, sucks that the tire was damaged.

I wouldn’t characterize it as a severe pothole but I’m with ya on being surprised the new Michelin’s would do this. No vibration at all.

A friend's tire did the same thing but he hit a monster of a pothole and bent the week as well.

Odd that happened and your not saying it was a large pot hole, wonder if that one tire was just defective to a degree. Strange.

Good thing I bought the road hazard coverage ($48) for each tire. They just replaced with a new one, which of course I have to buy the new coverage for. Tire Link advised me that if not for the road hazard coverage, I would have been on the hook for a new tire.

Sorry for the bad luck with the tire. Might be a bad tire? Definition of "small" pot hole?

Editorial comment- I wish folks would post with better descriptions of what the post is about? This is a tire issue? not a Heads Up issue!

Sorry to see, of course... but, welcome to the breed. Just no way around such things with this particular combination of construction variables.

You might still have warranty since it’s 3 weeks old.

Sorry you experienced this, but it had nothing to do with the run flat stiff sidewall. The stiff sidewall is on the inside. Not the outside. What ever it was I have not seen on this forum. Bad luck on your part. Usually if anything unusual happens its me.

^^^
We've had this happen twice (different years) on our 2017 Z51 with Mag Ride and the updated computer software.
Both times, the tire was AS3+ ZP. One front, one rear.
Both times the "cut" was on the outer face of the wheel/tire.
I've seen several posts of similar stories and most (all?) of them are the AS3+ ZP. It makes me wonder if the stiff inner sidewall is enough to keep the bead from being compressed enough to be cut by the rim, but the softer outer sidewall allows enough (too much) flex to cut the bead area of the tire. Here's a pic of our first one:

Same thing happened to me. Hit pothole. Waited to see low tire pressure warning, nothing, drove home, parked it. Looked a couple days later and saw the damage.
Fortunately I had purchased a tire/wheel warranty when I bought the car (used) and it paid for it. No damage to wheel.
