Just got a new key fob and had to buy the key separately. I still need to take it to a lock smith to get it keyed off the original. But.. It says in the instructions to use the key for the new fob under the license plate. Can I just use the original, I don't see why that wouldn't work, or am I wrong?
Use the original key to staart the addition of the new FOB for the car.
Here are the instructions. If you are adding a 3rd FOB, do the short program. If this will be the 2nd FOB, do the long program to make your FOBs #1 & #2.
Read ALL of the instructions before you start, pay attention to anything in RED, and make sure you have the coreect part number for your FOB.
I think you are right. The mechanical key in the fob is a backup for dead batteries, car or fob. Open the hatch or trunk, and pull the cable to open the driver's door. But if you don't carry the mechanical key, then you are out of luck getting into the car. I recommend each fob have the correct back up key.
Others more knowledgeable than me will confirm or correct.
So just leave the original key fob or #1 in the house? After key fob #2 is programmed, #1 will still work I assume. I printed out some instructions that are pretty much the same as yours, less the warnings.
I'm having a problem.. I followed the instructions. At the 1st step with the new key fob in the slot in the steering column, it doesn't beep when I hit the start button. If the old key fob is with me, then the screen will pop up and say ready to program remote #4. I press start like is says to program it, but it doesn't do anything. The screen just goes to sleep.
Ok, this is the weirdest thing.. So just in case one of you guys tries this and your car won't start even with the original fob that worked.. So, both fobs would unlock the doors manually, open the trunk and lock the doors. If I walked away from the vehice, the doors would lock as usual. But if I went to open the door, nothing. When I manually unlocked the doors and tried to start the car with either fob.. Nothing. So when in doubt, take the negative battery cable off and let it sit for about 10 mins..Put the cable back on and I went to the door with the original remote.. door opened, then I was pretty sure the car would start.. It did. So then I took the original remote into the house upstairs into the kitchen, left the fob on the counter. Took the new fob out there and same thing, door opened and the car started.. WTF! Just weird.. So I'm good now, not sure exactly why, but now I have a spare fob..
SO, do you have FOB 1 & 2 by doing the long program or do you have FOBs 1 & 3? If 1 & 2, then you have memory function with 2 FOBs. That means person 1 uses a FOB for specific seat settings, mirror, radio, whatever and person 2 uses the memory for different seat settings, mirror, radio, whatever.
If 1 & 3, only 1 FOB will have memory functionality, while the other FOB will start and operate the car WITHOUT any memory function.
What year car do you have? There is a difference in procedures for 2017 and newer.
Did you press the unlock button after processing a FOB? Did you pay attention to all of the stuff in the RED text?
Just trying to make sure you have memory in 2 FOBs.
Elmer,
Yes I read the red text like 4 times. I have a 14 Z51. I have no idea what # it put the new fob at. Honestly when I turned the key under the hatch 5 times the screen didn't even come on. Once it said something about what # fob. I hit the start button like the directions said and the screen just faded and that was it. Shouldn't the screen stay on?
Ok, so you have 2 FOBs. You should have done the long program steps. That would mean keep the working FOB AWAY from the car while you turn the key in the trunk lock. Keep all FOBs away when you set up the long FOB procedure. When you do this, the long procedure can be followed and then when it asks for the first FOB, whatever you stick in the steering wheel slot becomes FOB #1 and the next FOB will be #2. Be patient as this whole programming session will take well over 30 minutes to get it done. People take out the key and start turning the key with the FOB in their pocket, bad joo joo as the car sees the FOB in your pocket and the long program won't initiate.
Ok.. well they are both working, so I'm good. I'm the only one that drives the car. My brother does once in a while, but as long as it starts, I'm good..
