Default Help needed: front shock absorber

Hi all,

Recently found out that the front shocks need to be replaced and got an outrageous quote from the dealer for my 2015 Stingray 3LT Z51.

I've identified that the car is indeed FE4 in the RPO with MRC. Can anyone confirm that part number 84235048 is the replacement? And also, is it symmetrical? Last time I replaced shocks I remember there was left and rights.

Thanks!

Left front and right front shocks are the same part number. About $320 each, easy remove and replace. Any mechanic can do this, cheaper than going to a GM dealer.

Why do you think the shocks need to be replaced?

If there is oil seeping, they are OK (oil film on shock body, but no oil drips). If the oil is dripping from the shock, they should be replaced.

You didn’t say how much the dealer wanted for the parts/labor, but an independent shop may be cheaper on the labor side.

This. Replacing MRC shocks unnecessarily is a common scam.

Dealer quoted around 3k CAD for parts, labor and alignment which is an easy no but they were also unwilling to provide parts number. The leak doesn't look that bad to me but I got the car used so I'll probably start by cleaning it to get a better understanding of how bad it is.

Wanted to be prepared for the worst though!

That is a typical quote from a Can dealership.

Get a private shop to do it, or do it yourself if you feel up to it, Not that hard to do.

Part #s I would just call the parts department and give them your vin to look it up. If that dealership won't tell you call another, part department should definitely tell you.

I had all 4 replaced in my GS. They were in fact leaking and not just seeping. Dealer was more than double for parts, and labor was at their standard rate. Any local shop can do it for less than half. Rock Auto had the least expensive prices for the exact same parts (same GM part numbers).

But, as previously mentioned, make sure they are in fact bad and not just seeping. A little oil is normal, however if it's gathering/puddling on the inside of your wheels, they're bad.

Here's the GM drawing to evaluate a seeping/leaking shock.

On our 2017 Z51 with Mag Ride, they replaced all 4 under warranty at about 20k miles.
Two were really bad, the other two were marginal but since they were covered under warranty...

Also, no alignment is needed when the shocks are removed and replaced......
A GM dealer will charge you list price for parts, which is about $600 for each shock.

The car is new to me so honestly, it feels great and like there is nothing wrong. I'm just going by what the technician recommended during the inspection.

Sounds like the old spray some oil on the shock and declare a leak for a 4 wheel replacement or AKA, an up-sale by the tech or S.A. Listen to the advice you've received.

Wipe them all down and then check weekly or monthly depending on how much you drive it.

For what it's worth, my experience is that GM Parts Departments are quite helpful, even at otherwise sh**ty dealerships... just sayin'
