Default Damaged TPMS or tire shop error?

Had my tire pulled so the run flat could be patched properly. My GS rear rim is cracked as well if that makes any difference. But after the repair the tpms was reading about 17psi. Went to the gas station and filled every tire to 30psi and confirmed with a separate gauge and still read 17psi on the drive home.

Next day this wheel reads 27psi on the dash. Confirmed all tires are the same again at 30 psi. Is the tpms broken or was there an error in the tire shops reinstall? Before pulling the tire it read air changes accurately and quickly.

As you are driving around is the value not updating every few minutes like it should?

no it's been stuck at 27psi in dash. Manual gauge reads 31psi on the tire. It wasn't like this before the tire repair though so not sure what they could have done.

If the tire shop did not pay attention to the TPMS location, it could have been pinched by the tire bead and messed it up. The TPMS housing is just plastic, so it could easily get crushed by the tire. The tire machine has plenty enough torque to damage the TPMS sensor.

it is the tpms to answer your question - you will have to get a new one installed

If you can find someone with a TPMS scan tool, you could verify the sensor is not working correctly. I have a scan tool, but being in St. Louis, that does not help you out.

I'm going to the tire shop to see if they can read it real quick

How old are the sensors? The battery may be expiring in yours.

Good luck finding out the problem. Have to wonder if when the wheel was put on the tire change machine, the crack in the wheel was aggravated and is now causing a slow loss of pressure. Otherwise, the TPS may have been damaged if hit during the tire removal/install process.

I'm not sure how old the senses are but its definitely broken. Just got home and the tire monitor light came on. That wheel isn't reading anything now. I wonder if they will replace it.........

If this is a C7 (since this is the C7 section) the sensor is no more than 8 years old. It should last at least 10 years. You can ask them to replace it, but it would be hard to prove they actually broke it unless you could see physical damage to the sensor when it is pulled out for replacement.

May be a battery going bad on you.

On another GM vehicle I own, the batteries lasted ~8 years before I started to notice a discrepancy in what TPMS DIC showed and what my Longacre tire gauge showed.

Just got back from the shop. The tech pulled the tire off and we saw that the sensor had been cracked. I was ready to just pay for the replacement but they took ownership and fixed it free of charge, saved me $85 normal charge. I was very surprised!
It wasn't an oem replacement but I'm happy it was resolved.

Glad to hear they owned up and fixed it! I suggest not going to that tire shop in the future since the only reason the sensor got broken was they botched the tire dismount or mount. You are lucky they did not damage your wheel and / or tire. Tire changing these big low profile tires is no easy thing to do unless you have the right equipment and right knowledge to use it responsibly.

From time to time one sensor would fail to start up on my C5 but they were all working with no battery replacement when I sold it 18 years later.

When, I got all four tires replaced, a couple of months ago, the reading was wacky on My Chevy and the instrument pane,l for about a week, and then settled down.

I actually would make them my goto tire shop from now on. They did you right and they will remember you next time you walk in the door. Before retiring I was a Lexus dealer tech and have mounted a lot of runflat tires. The job is a b-tch. Just no way around that. One of Lexus rules was this; mistakes happen, what separates the good dealer from the bad dealer is how the dealer fixes the mistake.
