In March of this year I picked up a clean 2014 base manual Stingray that had it`s original LT1 replaced with a LT1 crate engine due to a dropped valve. My question is what octane is recommended for this engine? My manual says 91 octane. Later manuals recommend 93 octane. The GM crate engine was installed by a Chevy dealer in January of this year which may indicate this is a later LT1 that would require 93 octane. What do you all think?
Most premium pump gas in NY state is 93 octane. Even the cars with the OMs that call out 93 octane have to use 91 octane on the west coast as 93 is non existent in that area.
IIRC, the recommendation switch from 91 to 93 happened some time during the production life of the C7 but GM said the engine and the tune were not changed.
The manual even allows 87 but warns that you will experience lower performance and fuel economy, may also experience knocking.
Either way, stay with Top Tier. DI engines don't benefit as much as older engines, but TT is still better than what you get from "Joe's Live Bait, Body Piercing, and Cheap Gas" stations.
