Cost for 1 retail report is $39.99. You can reduce the per report cost by buying 3 (for $59.99) or 6 for ($99.99).
If you buy more than 1 report, be sure to use ALL of them ASAP.
I bought 3 reports over a year ago, ran 2 reports but just checked and I cannot run the 3rd report anymore. Just submitted a request to reinstate a credit for the last report that was paid for but not used.
Also note that if you order a report, make sure to print it out and keep it for future reference because any report you order will also eventually "expire" on CarFax's website as well.
PS: I haven't seen it offered on this Forum but I have seen offers to run CarFax reports for around $10 (if I recall).
Have seen this offer made on the BMW Forums off/on at various times presumably under commercial/dealer accounts in order to recoup some of their CarFax fees.
Don't put too much confidence in a CarFax report. I know this from experience. We had a new Honda Accord for about one week, and it got hit my a deer. Nearly $3,000 in repairs. I also had a Chevy Trailblazer that had a rear tailight and some body damage repaired. Cost was ~ $500. Both were taken to reputable body shops. Neither vehicle ever showed up on any CarFax report. Just say'n.

Here's the reply I got from CarFax:
"Any unused CARFAX Report searches remain available to use for one year from the purchase date. Once you run a CARFAX Report, you have access to it for the next 60 days. Upon review, it appears your unused Report expired on 09/07/2021. As a one-time courtesy, I have reactivated this Report and it will now expire on 09/28/2022 if left unused."
Bear this in mind if you buy more than 1 CarFax report at a time.

As for the reliability of CarFax reports, no vehicle "report" is perfect but that's really NOT the issue.
Most people expect to receive a copy of a CarFax report as well as all past service/repair records) for any car they are buying. I know I do. It's just SOP these days. A lot of things can come up "missing" from a CarFax and other vehicle reports. That's why people want to see the service/repair records too.
I bought 3 reports last year because I was planning to sell my 911 (which was sold) and was thinking about selling my MB SUV (which I didn't sell). Now I'm thinking about selling my MR2 as well and need to run a CarFax report for it too.
Just the price you have to pay to buy/sell cars/trucks these days.

Carfax isn't perfect but the more information that you have on a car, the better
None of these services are perfect. The shop has to pay to belong to them. If they don't belong work doesn't get reported.
The shop does not need to belong for repairs to be reported. CarFax gets much of their information from public sources such as police reports etc. They also get information from insurance companies.
Is there a fee to run a carfax report. Can anyone do it or do you need a dealer to do it?
Don't know any free but i have tried Cheap Carfax site https://fullcarfax.com before and report got instantly delivered. it was $6.99 not sure how much is now
This is a 2 year-old thread but the fact still remains.. $39.95 is a small price to pay for info on a potential purchase of a multi thousand dollar car
