Default Remote #3

Traded my 2018 m7 base stingray in on a 2019 a8 z51. Here’s the problem, we only received one remote, the dealer bought a second, now when I try to set the memory for the seats, it tells me the new remote is #3. Where is #3 on the door button? It will not set? Can I somehow delete the previous owners settings and start fresh? Thanx for any light on this, it’s frustrating!

There is a procedure to erase all remotes, and program the ones you have from the beginning:

Programming without a Recognized Transmitter
If there are no currently recognized transmitters available, follow this procedure to program up to eight transmitters. This feature is not available in Canada. This procedure will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. The vehicle must be off and all transmitters to be programmed must be present.
  1. The vehicle must be off.
  2. Remove the key from the transmitter and insert the vehicle key into the key cylinder above the license plate.
  3. Open the hatch/trunk.
  4. Turn the key five times within 10 seconds. The DIC message displays REMOTE LEARN PENDING PLEASE WAIT.
  5. Return key base back into the RKE transmitter.
  6. Wait for 10 minutes until the DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN, then press the ENGINE START/STOP button. The DIC reads REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
  7. Repeat Step 6 two additional times. After the third time all previously known transmitters will no longer work with the vehicle. Remaining transmitters can be relearned during the next steps. The DIC display should now show READY FOR REMOTE #1.
  8. Place the new transmitter in the steering column transmitter pocket with the buttons facing up and the base toward the opening facing the passenger side.
  9. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. When the transmitter is learned, the DIC display will show that it is ready to program the new transmitter. Remove the transmitter from the transmitter pocket and press Q or K on the transmitter. To program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 9–
  10. When all additional transmitters are programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for approximately 12 seconds to exit programming mode.

Hmmm, the new remote has been programmed by the dealer, and works like it should, all except for seat programming. Instructions say you can program up to 8 remotes, I programmed it while waiting for my wife, it worked for one day the next day it was gone? And telling me it’s now remote #3? my confusion is there is no #3 button on the door. What am I missing? What if I was #8? Thanx again, for taking time to help out.

I had to go through this with our new-used 2017. When we bought it and drove it home from NY State we only had fobs #2 & #3. However, memory functions on the door only recognize fobs #1 & #2. After we got home to Oregon, the very next day I did the programming listed above by Flame Red. The result is that I now have fobs #1 &#2 so that all memory functions work.

Please use the procedure above, which is straight out of the manual. It will remove all the fobs, and you program all the fobs you have, #1 then #2, and they will be 1 and 2 on the doors afterwards. If you follow the procedure properly! I had to do it a couple times myself till I figured out it is time sensitive.

Do the long program in this thread.

Only 1 & 2 have memory. When you add, the programming thinks you are adding #3. You need to clean it's brain and start the process afresh and when you take the long program path, that's what it does. The first FOB in the programming sequence becomes #1 and the 2nd becomes #2. Both will have memory for each driver. If you add more (up to 8 total) they will run the car just fine but they will not have the memory function to set the seat, mirrors, radio favorites, etc.

Do the long program:

Interesting conversation - try the reprogramming methods presented above and you should get it all straightened out.

THIS. Had the exact same situation as the OP when I bought from the dealer, followed this and all is well as #1 and #2. Takes a while, but it's 100% easy to do and will work.
