GPS & Onstar?

It cost a few bucks, i think I am worth it.
If the car is 2016 or newer, she can hook up her phone and use Android Auto or Apple Carplay for free, regardless of which nav package it has. It pulls the map data from your cell phone, so it's always up to date. Only drawback is possible data use fees if she doesn't have an unlimited plan. You can download the maps ahead of time on wifi, so that's a possible workaround.

What the others have said, its pretty standard on most cars, get a USB from the dealer and plug it in, they will have instructions to update the map to the latest. You don't need to have that $40 subscription for the Navigation....
Honestly, I have never gotten much luck from factory nav comparing to google maps for me, with android auto the maps are always up to date, and so are the waypoints like gas stations, restaraunts and whatnot.... My 2015 Ram came with Nav, and I use to to look at from time to time, but its reliability to get the fastest route is never as good as google... I have never updated the maps on the truck... Nice thing about google maps, is if there is accidents or speed traps or construction, its monitoring all the phones in the area and it will show you if traffic is bogging down to a slow (orange), or even super slow / stopped (red) warnings, and will attempt to reroute you away from slower routes - its light years ahead of navs on cars. they just can't keep up with the tech....
If you have Apple / or Android Auto, just have the phone connect and do the work for you.... if your phone loses signal, switch to the car nav until the phone signal comes back, which is pretty rare....
Good luck - $99 is not bad to update.... and lose that stupid onstar bill.....
