So the other day I found ash in my car. Up on the passenger side dash and seat. Almost like someone was in the car smoking which is not possible unless you believe in the x-files. Its a daily driver and I have had it for 2 years. Use the ac and heat all the time and when I bought the car I changed the cabin filter. It was owned by a smoker but smoke is smoke and ash is ash. How would ash get into the system and suddenly after 2 years spew out. If he had it on recirc could it have sucked in ash? Very strange.

Hard to say how any ash-like material got in your car if you do not smoke or unless there is a volcano nearby. I would just clean the interior and see if any ash comes back - if so, perhaps something could be in your HVAC system. Check your cabin air filter again to see if it is OK.
I have seen ash fly out from an inconsiderate driver smoking in a car in front of you.. not outside the realm of possibility it could get in a car that way? I have personally seen car show folks looking at peoples car while holding cigar or cigarettes' and most definitely know ash can drop in car..
Its not carbon fiber, its ash. Smears grey. So does all of the air regardless of mode (ie defrost, floor, etc) go thru the filter before coming out. If so , the smoking man from x-files was in my car.
If someone in the neighborhood was burning leaves, the ash floats a long distance from the fire and settles wherever it wants to. If your windows were open even a little the ash will find it's way in.

Yeah, I suppose that is more likely than my ghost idea.
I take it you bought it used? Anything can relocare within the car by it's HVAC system. The ash/es may have gotten into a solidified state somewhere along the line, and relocated by air current.
Anytime anyone jacks with your car and you're not present, you'll never know how the car was treated. I brought my car in for convertible assembly creaking at the rear of the roof, and this cowboy Chevrolet dealer sprays WD 40 overspray on the windshield, and freakin' Vaseline liberally applied to the windshield contact points. The GD roof still creaks. In the REAR portion.....
