Default Onstar

Are 2017's affected by the 3g sunset ?
Onstar's information is so confusing. I entered in my VIN for my 2014 Suburban, and a 2G message comes up.

The 3G or 2G network your vehicle connects to will sunset in 2022: 3G in February 2022 and 2G in December 2022. Check to see how to stay connected and keep your services by entering your vehicle identification number (VIN) below.

If you will lose 3G, you will lose 2G

I'm confused by the 2G term. Isn't 2G long gone ??? and why is 2G out-living 3G?
I called onstar in my 2014 Suburban, and asked how is this phone call possible if 3G is dead? The advisor couldn't answer me !!

I went to Onstar and asked for information. Here is what I got in a chat with an advisor:

Attempting to connect you to an advisor...
Info at 13:18, Mar 7 A messaging advisor will respond in a few minutes. You will receive a notification here for all replies.

Rommel at 13:19, Mar 7 It's a great day here at General Motors Customer Assistance. My name is Rommel. Hi Elmer! How may I help you?

You at 13:19, Mar 7 Hi. I have a 2014 corbette and I know that 3g is going away. Will the buttons on my mirror still work and how do they work without the 3g link

You at 13:20, Mar 7: corbette is code for corvette

Rommel at 13:21, Mar 7 Yes, they will still work. I want to inform you also that Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles on the road in the U.S. today use OnStar hardware with AT&T's cellular network for connectivity. All GM vehicles that support 3G also support 4G LTE technology. GM is continuing to deploy over-the-air software updates to ensure a high-quality experience in areas that do not have 3G underlay.

You at 13:22, Mar 7 So, my 2014 is going to get an update to switch it to 4gLTE?

Rommel at 13:24, Mar 7 No, you can still use your mirror and that will still work if their will be update you will be informed but now no update yet since all GM vehicles that support 3G also support 4G LTE technology.

You at 13:25, Mar 7 So, there is no issue with 3G going away as my car also works with 4GLTE, excellent.

Rommel at 13:25, Mar 7 That is correct. Do you have any other questions that I may assist you today?

You at 13:25, Mar 7 Nope, you have done well grasshopper, thanks.

Rommel at 13:26, Mar 7 Feel free to message us back if you need any further assistance, know that were always here to help.
Thank you for Contacting General Motors Customer Assistance My Name is Rommel. Be safe out there

You at 13:26, Mar 7 Bye

Sounds to me like he has no problem with a 2014 Burb. Some vehicles will receive a software download to properly configure their 4G capability. This will occur as needed.

The one that OnStar hasn't answered is my 2003 Tahoe which went through the analog signal sunset back in 2008. In 2007 I had the vehicle upgraded which meant the dealer installed a new digital OnStar module in the car. The cost of the hardware installation also provided a year's On-Star subscription. When I asked the OnStar Advisor how they were planning on updating my 2G maybe 3G on a 19 year old vehicle I got humma, humma, humma and then we will have to get back with you on that.

Took 30 minutes to get "an Onstar advisor yesterday then I was told it would be $24.95 for the Traffic option plus $29.95 for the stuff I already have. Platinum is 49.95 about 50 bucks $600 a year for Onstar and no phone calls???... UNBELIEVABLE I'll just have to take my chances with out it GEESH!

Do what I do. Call them on occasion, and ask how is this phone call happening if 3G has sunset. The advisor is totally baffled. The last time they called technical support. Good way to kill time while traveling...

I agree. I had Onstar for a number of years. Like cable TV, as the years went on the subscriptions got more expensive and the features were either eliminated or added to more expensive "packages". I dropped them like a bad habit a while ago and haven't regretted it for one second. Android Auto, specifically Waze, and a cell phone mobile hotspot has made Onstar a thing of the past for me.

the 2G & 3G (GSM & CDMA) cellular networks will be unsupported everywhere in the US by the end of 2022 (most carriers have already retired those towers, however, Verizon & a couple others still have some running in many areas). i was just forced to change from the 3G phone i've been using reliably for the last 6.5yrs up to a 4GLTE a couple weeks ago.

from what i understand, 2015 was when the OnStar modules switched from 2G to 4GLTE cell cards, therefore 2015+ will be fine after the sunset. i've seen talks of OnStar offering folks with older models an OBDII device that works through your telephone to provide similar services to what they had before... but i never cared to look further into it because i made a point to disable our OnStar rather than give it another avenue to snoop / control my life.

My only thing with on-star. I want the 'accident response' for my wife and kids. Otherwise I couldn't care less about it.

GM is using 4G-LTE for OnStar. At least the Corvette does and all "other newer" GM vehicles.

Download the WAZE app to your phone. and open an account. You can customize WAZE (favorite locations, map display, etc.) on the phone app. Everything you do on your WAZE app will appear when you open WAZE in Android Auto. Download the Android Auto app. Open the app look for and tap on "customize launcher". Just ensure that the square next to WAZE is blue and contains a checkmark. Then get in your Corvette, go to the home screen. Find and open the Android Auto icon and the WAZE icon should appear on your screen. Disclaimer: I'm not a techie and am going from memory. I may have missed a few minor details but what is written above should be enough to get you going. 👍🏻🤜🏻💥🤛🏻

The alarm system in my house stopped working. The techie removed the 4G communications module, and installed a LTE module. He told me, no more 4G anywhere !! Only LTE & 5G.

Yes, I'm scratching my head.

Yes, I'm scratching my head.
LTE is basically an advancement in 4the Generation cell technology that wasn't part of the 5th Gen (5G) architecture.
everything prior to 4G-LTE (including early/basic 4G) will be offline by the end of this year.
