Just watched a video of Late model racecraft testing a 2017 grandsport. He talked talked about putting the car in manual mode and punching it in second gear. The grandsport was an auto. He put it into manual mode and once he hit the paddle shifter to second, he punched it and the car shifted on its own. I would like to try and learn to use manual mode more often. Was wondering if anyone could give some information on what you can and can’t do in manual mode. Thank you.
In Manual Mode, you have to keep the revs up, just like a two-stroke! When, you get close to the redline, you hit the paddle, instead of shifting like you would a stick. It will bog down if you wimp out. Keep the "R's" up! jmho
Found it on YouTube. Type in Late Model Racecraft. Then find the video that says “650 horsepower supercharger package. Turn your LT1 into LT4 power. C7 grandsport.” At the 14:20 mark you will see he puts it into manual mode then shifts to 2nd gear. Then he punches it and he never uses the paddle shifters again. My question is will the car shift by itself while in manual mode even though your not using the paddle shifters? Does it sense a shift needs to be made and will the auto then go ahead and shift for you?
I’ll take a look at what you’re referring, but from my knowledge, if you put the shifter in m, it will never shift in its own. If you’re in D, and you hit the paddles to manual shift, it will start shifting again on its own in a few seconds of you not touching the paddles again. (As long as you stay in D)
They are programming the TCU to auto shift when in manual mode after the initial hit. Great for those who roll race. Have your tuner do it.
from the factory your A8 will not auto shift. It will bounce off the rev limiter and cut all your power while scaring the **** out of you thinking you broke something.

If you're in D, and hit a paddle, won't it go back to auto after a few seconds, from factory? My thought was he used the paddle to get it in 2nd (where he wanted to start from) then a few seconds passed and punched it, then auto shifted. I don't do it much, but I've done similar to that before.

Yes but doing a roll race the car will jump back out of the lower gear into auto before you take the hit resulting in you getting gapped.
they are programming the TCU to do that in manual mode. It’s pretty slick.
Thanks for the great discussion guys. I always learn a lot from this forum. I read in the manual that while driving in regular auto mode you can click or hold down the left paddle to downshift to a lower gear. Guess that’s helpful for passing other cars. I have never done it. Curious how many of you folks apply this maneuver? Does it matter what speed I’m going at the time to use this technique? For example if I’m already going 80 mph or so, can I still click the left paddle shifter to get me in a lower gear? I’m trying to use the paddle shifters more but it seems awkward.

Those with more knowledge will correct me if I'm wrong, but if I remember correctly, if you tap the left paddle, it will downshift 1 gear, but if you hold the paddle, it will down shift to the lowest gear possible at the rpm range to not cause damage.

As others noted, you are correct.
The downside of that setup is that at lower speeds, the car will downshift to the lowest gear that's acceptable right now, but .0001 seconds later (slight exaggeration) you'll be hitting the rev limiter.
At highway speeds, it works better.

I really wish the A8s did this stock. I love to hammer the pedal but not from a dead stop. Manual shift from 1st to 2nd is so slow and I want to roll into it without kicking down gears.
Any idea what it would cost to get a tune just to do this?
