i lost one of my remote transmitters and bought a new one from gm parts direct. do i have to involve a dealer to program it to my car or can i do it myself? are there instructions on how to do the programming?
You have 1 FOB and want to add a 2nd FOB just as it came from the factory with FULL Memory on both FOBs. You must do the long routine as this will Program the car for FOBs 1 & 2 and both will have full seat, radio and other stuff memory functions. SO FOB 1 will adjust the seat one way and FOB #2 will adjust the seat for your partner.
If you just want to "add" a FOB(short routine), it'll add the FOB as #3 and it will NOT have any memory functions but it will be a fully functioning FOB except for the memory. You can "add" up to 8 active FOBs but only FOBs 1 & 2 will have memory functions. Fobs 3 - 8 will lock, unlock, start, put the top down, open the trunk, sound the alarm but that is all. If you have 1 FOB#1 and add #3, only #1 will have any memory.
The later models have slightly different instructions and may require FOBs 1 & 2 to add ANY FOBs. THe long routine must be used in this case as you want the car to think all FOBs are lost and you're starting fresh for 1 & 2.

you are correct. should have thought of that. if you have one fob that works, much easier to program a new fob. piece of cake following the steps outlined in the manual. thx aklim!

Yes but that means that it won't forget the problem key and memory features will not work for the new key

While true it is in the manual. Does the manual mention signal interference? Or the fact that you can't have ANY FOBs around while you do the long program? The link I provided has a lot of RED TEXT in it that is important to know while you do the programming. If you use the key on the rear and turn it, guess what happens if you have the FOB near the rear sensor? Not going to tell you, look in the Manual

i did the short routine as per the manual. the fob i lost was number 1. i used fob 2 to program the new fob, (3?). initially the memory didn’t work. i then started the car and let it idle a few minutes. turned off the car and tried the memory again. works like a charm!
all i can say is memory works for me using the new fob. not looking a gift horse in the mouth.😅
So drivers 1 and 2 will automatically be right? Mine said Driver 2 and the other was driver 3. Memory seats worked for 2 but not 3 so it didn't know what to do when you have key 3 and you have to press the button. After the wipe, I have one seat setting as does the wife. When she sits in it, it sets automatically to her settings as it does with me.

you are right. i should have explained my situation is a bit different. i’m the only driver. i got a new fob after i lost the first one in case anything happens to one in the future. basically one fob is never used. now the new fob memory works for setting the driving position, but will not activate the exit position when opening the door. for that to work i have to start the car. but i have to start the car to use it so it’s really not an issue. plus the new fob, pending any future fob issues, will spend its life sitting in a drawer. granted, my particular situation is far from normal and simply wouldn’t work for two unique memories.
