Default TPMS/battery question

I'll be putting new tires on our 2015 in a few months. At that time, is it recommended to replace the pressure sensors in each wheel? Or do the sensors have a battery that is replaced?

TIA,
Larry

The battery cant be replaced. I dont recall many threads on dead batteries (or even one?). The TPMS in my 13 year old SUV still has the original sensors.

My 2014 sensors are still working in my car. When I change my next set of tires, or if one craps out before, I'll replace the OEM sensors with new ones.

The battery is not meant to be replaceable, however there is a video somewhere on Youtube showing how to do it, at least for one brand. Quite tedious and complicated; requires breaking glued seals, soldering and regluing. New ones are in the $40 range, I wouldn't consider it remotely worth the time and effort.

I'd replace them. They are already near their projected life span

If it were my car, I would go ahead and just replace them - consider it preventative maintenance.

TPMS sensors have batteries that last between 7 and 15 years. A shop with proper tooling should be able to read out the battery life of most sensors and recommend replacement accordingly. This can be done with the wheels on the car and everything.

Worst case scenario you take the gamble and a TPMS sensor dies before your tires wear out. You buy a new sensor, and pay for a dismount+remount of your tire -- so like $70.

The tire(s) do not have to be dismounted and re-mounted to replace a TPMS sensor.
Only the bead needs to be broken on the TPMS side of the tire and the sensor can be replaced.
If they mark the tire, you won't even need a re-balance.
Had a sensor on a 2014 I owned replaced by the dealer years ago.

There are two new TPMS sensors in the for sale section. Good price.

I just replaced the tires on my 2014 that I purchased new in October 2013. I also had the TPS sensors replaced as well as they were 9 years old.

Replacing the battery is too cumbersome and prone to problems. If it really needs to be replaced, it is better to find a professional person to help. As for the TPMS sensor, it should continue to work, if it's not too old.

Do you have a lot of miles on the car? The less it is driven, the longer the sensors are asleep meaning longer life span.

Good point. Currently has 18,000 miles. Bought in December with 13,000. Looks like I'm having more fun with it than the two previous owners.

Personally I would leave them be as they can be changed out one by one without removing the tire from the wheel.

As usual, contributors to this thread offer sage guidance! I hope no one will mind if I resurrect the topic.

Last September, I had 3 TPMS sensors play up during a long-distance drive. I do not have LED side marker lights installed. The guidance from members here was to replace all 4. One member offered a well-known eBay vendor as a reasonably-priced sensor source. My local dealer did the install.

Fast forward 15 months and 5000 miles, and my two front sensors dropped out during a drive this afternoon. Before I spend the money to replace them again, I’m compelled to ask: If typical sensors should last a decade or so, is there any other cause to which I might attribute this most recent failure?

Thanks in advance!

I bought new GM OEM sensors from a seller on ebay. One of them has died already in less than two years. I replaced it with a Schrader sensor from Rock Auto. I have more confidence that Rock Auto is selling me good sensors vs some ebay seller that may have sold me counterfeit parts that do not last. The Schrader 20223 part is exactly the same as the GM OEM 13598775 part.

The GM OEM TPMS sensors made it on my Yukon Denali for over ten years. I had them (OEM) replaced three years ago and they are still going strong.

Last year I purchased four new TPMS sensors from Rock Auto for a second set of C7 wheels; except, they were ACDELCO OEM, #13598775. So when I dropped them off at the local Discount Tire store with the wheels, I learned quickly that the ACDELCO EOM sensors were not shipped with the stem seal locking nuts. Discount Tire to the rescue, they had stem seal locknuts that would fit and seal properly.

When I ordered the TPMS sensors from Rock Auto, I foolishly did not notice that the OEM sensors did not come with stem seal lock nuts. Later I learned the stem seal lock nuts are not available from Rock Auto, still to this day, and at the time they were not available from GM either!!

Good advice from @RacerRik, the SCHRADER TPMS sensors from Rock Auto should work just fine and the batteries should provide a long service life. Yes, they come complete with the stem seal lock nuts.
