Default Coolant temperature sensor

What causes the coolant temperature sensor to go bad? I have a 2016 Stingray and I have had to replace 2 in 2yrs.

Are you using OEM parts?

The temp. gauge doesn't register, it stays on zero and the coolant fan stays on and will not cut off unless you disconnect the battery.

That is a weak thermostat. I have had the same issue. AC doesnt work either. Changed out thermostat and its working fine. Best place to buy a thermostat is Rock Auto

Did you change it yourself or take it somewhere? And would you happen to have the part number?

I did it my self. Its pretty simple. Mine is a 16 base Non Z51

The part number at Rock Auto for mine is GM GENUINE 1511113

There is a sticky I followed here. The OP used a 160 stat but stock stat is same install.

HOW TO: Installing a new LMR 160° Thermostat and Housing - CorvetteForum - Chevrolet Corvette Forum Discussion

Good luck.

It's probably the thermostat, as others have said.

If you had removed the existing sensor and then put it back (the same sensor), odds are the car would run correctly, just like REPLACING the sensor.

The steps used to remove/replace the sensor reset the system and it works until the THERMOSTAT doesn't open as fast as the computer expects on cold start, and the computer then sets the undertemp code causing your symptoms. It's probably not the sensor.

My 2016 did the same thing about 14 months ago.
We were on a trip and suddenly lost the temp gauge.
Went to Chevy and bought the sensor.
On the trip home discovered that the temp gauge never got to 190.
Bought a new T-stat from GM. You get the whole assembly, not just the thermostat it self.
Easy R&R.
Been fine ever since.
