Default C7 Engine Heat

I'm brand new to both this Forum and to Corvette ownership. I did, however, search the forum before posting this, but I found nothing specific to my question. I'm certain I'll have many questions in the coming weeks. I'll try not to be the ". . . dumbest kid in the class . . .".

Here's my 1st question. My car is a 2016 Stingray Convertible Z51/2LT. I've only owned it about a week. I drove it yesterday for a short hop; about 7 miles to my destination, where it sat for about 3 hours outdoors. I then drove the 7 mile return trip, with some traffic. When I got home, I put the car in the garage. I went out to the garage about 15 minutes later and found that the ambient air temp in the garage was about 20 degrees higher than when I pulled in. The car was radiating what seemed to be an enormous amount of heat. The hood was warm to the touch, but not excessively hot. There was no indication of overheating on the instrument panel as I drove home. The car (and the garage) seemed to stay warm for a couple of hours after I parked the car.

I know the LT1 is a big, high performance lump, but is this kind of post shut-down heat radiation normal? If it is, I won't worry. If it's not, I'll have to look for solutions.

Additional, potentially relevant data. I live in South Florida and the ambient air temperature at the time I got home was about 88 degrees. The garage is not air conditioned. The car has 17,500 original miles. I do not have its service history. While driving, it was in "tour" mode.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Kerry

It's not overheating or the car would tell you. Every car I've ever parked in a garage heats up the area quickly, C7 no more so than anything else.

Our 2015 Z51 2LT 18,000 miles warms the garage up after a drive.

Perfectly normal. I actually appreciated that the few times I'd take my C7 GS out for a drive on chilly dry winter day.

Your experience is normal. My garage is fully drywalled and extremely well insulated. My garage temps rise just like yours when i park my Vette in there after using it...nothing to worry about!

By the way, welcome to the Forum. Lots of answers to your questions from very experienced people here. Don't worry about a question being dumb; we've all had them at one time or another.

Another thing you will probably encounter (if not already) that's also normal is a strange sizzling sound after you pull into the garage. This is the AC condensation drain dripping water on your hot exhaust.

Perfectly normal, nothing to worry about. If the car is a little overheated the radiator fan will stay on for a short time after you shut the engine off.

My 85 C4 was designed to run much hotter. The radiator fans were set to come on at 240 degrees.

Is it possible you never noticed the garage heat from you other autos before? And if they’re smaller engines, they’re lesser heat.
I’ve always noticed my garage heat from autos, and glad my garage ceiling is uninsulated.

For 100% piece of mind check the coolant temp before parking. A 6.2L block will hold some heat compared to a 2L four banger.

On really hot days I will park in the driveway when I get home to keep the garage cooler. Then bring her in at night.

Sounds like a normal occurrence to me. After I drive my ‘14, my garage heats up pretty fast when I shut down the car and close the garage door.

Everyone hit the nail on the head. Very normal. In fact because of the way the vette moves hot air out of the radaitor and out of the engine bay on the sides, it is really much cooler than other V*8's (5.7 Hemi) I have had. For me I have climate controlled garage. When I get home from a drive, I just pop and lift the hood outside to vent the heat for about 45 minutes. Does not make much sense to move a 200 deg engine compartment in a 79 deg garage. But in the winter time. It goes right in.

My C4 heats the garage up way more than the C7 does.

I want to thank everyone who weighed in on this topic - you've all set my mind at ease (at least on this issue).

I suspect there will be other issues to follow.

Which annoys the crap out of me...one, the continual thermal shock on that spot of the exhaust can't be great for the overall life of the pipe. Two, it smacks of a design oversight. How this was missed during the testing period is surprising. And there is still condensate puddled on the garage floor...
