gear shift letters on console

gear shift letters on console
I've had a couple of C7's, all of them had Letters in the console for the automatics, Bought one the other day can't read the letters and its not illuminated. The vette is a 3lt, the dealer is telling me it was an option for the gear letters and to have it illuminated.
I never saw any car without the gear numbers. I do believe the dealer is full of crap. If I'm wrong, can someone enlighten me, Sound like a numb question, just curious.
