How much does outside temp affect engine temperature?
So I noticed that my rev limiter wasn't moving past 5000 rpm so I took it to the dealer to have them check the thermometer.
They said there was no problem with the thermostat.
So I kept an eye on it and this is what I noticed.
After the engine has been warmed up, the rev limiter stays at 5000 rpm and the engine temp is around 156 degrees when driving on the highway.
When I stop at a light or drive at slow speeds in the neighborhood, the rev limiter goes up to 6500 rpm and the engine temp is around 175 degrees.
I live in Oregon where the outside temp is between 40-50 degrees right now.
Is the cold air when driving at high speeds affecting the engine temp so that it affects the rev limiter?
I've read that the operating engine temp should be around 190 degrees or so.
You have a thermostat that's stuck open. Ask yourself this....Do you really think GM would sell a car that won't warm up in cooler temps? If you think yes, I have a bridge to sell you.
If your thermostat is stock, it should be keeping your coolant right around 190'F once the engine is warmed up.
156' is definitely below normal, and that would explain why your yellow arc doesn't move up to 6500 rpm.
When you stop or drive slowly, there is less airflow through the radiator and the coolant temperature increases, but still not up to normal.
I had something similar occasionally, with our 2017 Z51 at about 20k miles. Dealership couldn't find anything wrong (no codes), but they agreed to change the thermostat for me, I would pay if the original thermostat checked normal but it would be covered under warranty if defective.
They billed me 0 for the work and charged it to warranty, so it was defective. Or they were being nice to me, we have a good dealership that does things like that.
Either way, no problems in the last 30k miles.
Replace the thermostat with a new AC Delco. I had the same issue on my 2019 GS when new. Now the coolant temp stays 180 F or so in cool weather. Oil temp stays a bit lower during highway driving. The rev suggestion (not a limiter) goes away at 176 F.
I drove my 2017 GS two weekends ago. It was 18 degrees when I left the house. While the coolant temp rose quickly as it should, it took about 6 miles for the oil to heat up to 110. I don't consider the car warmed up completely until oil temp gets above 120 degrees or so. I try to stay below 3,000 rpm until then.
I had the same issue with my 2019 GS. Two dealers couldn't find an issue because no codes (they don't troubleshoot anymore). I changed the thermostat, took about an hour. Problem gone.
My 2016Z had the same issue, no codes, but rev display & shift lights came on earlier that usual. In my case, my extended warranty replaced the thermostat & coolant, problem solved, car now warms up to 195 degrees within 4 miles. Just because the coolant now warms up quickly, it takes several miles for the oil temp to reach coolant temp temperature.
I'm experiencing something similar, but not quite the same. For the past two weeks while driving to my corporate office in downtown Miami I've noticed my coolant temperature going up and down like a yoyo by more than 30 degrees. Keep in mind that this is a 90 minute commute for me with a mix of highway and streets. At times, the yellow/red REV Delimiter bar pops up when my coolant temp drops below 178 degrees, then it goes away. This can happen four or five times during the drive. By the time I get to the office, I don't hear the engine fan running as it use to. I made an appointment for Monday to have this check by the dealer. Sounds to me like my thermostat is on the way out.
My Vette (here in North Italy we have more or less 50° F now) stay around 200°F oil temp (litlle bit down the line of 200°F) and the rev limiter go away normally after warm up... never return rev-limiter after warm up. I think you have a problem with something
I had a flaky thermostat that caused the slow warmup and cooling fan run on issue. Changed temp sensor and it still did it. Changed tstat and problem gone. Now the normal water temp is around 215. It heats up very quickly from a 40 degree startup. Previous to the change it would very slowly get to 185 or so. I'd like the temp to be lower and have another aftermarket tstat to install but its running so good I'm hesitant to change it. I think the tstat is from Jet. I got it from summit.

Update. All fixed! I took the car in this week for service to address this issue. Technician found significant temperature differences in upper and lower hoses. Coolant thermostat should have open. Thermostat replaced and coolant refilled and bled. Best part, no charge. Repair was still under drivetrain warranty coverage. No complaints from me!
