I recently purchased a 2014 C7 from one of the many Hendrick dealerships. Had it for a month and just now reading infotainment on NAV system. Looks like the GPS isn’t finding satellites as it has the Red X over the icon right hand corner of screen. It said to recalibrate let car idle for 2-5 minutes open area. I’ve done thot but saw nothing on screen to tell me anything changed or connected.
It’s strange to me as the NAV still shows my car on route in my area when traveling. How does it still show movement if no GPS? Keep thinking there’s something I’m not pulling up on NAV system to connect. Amy ideas?
Read some older posts on subject and it seems a common problem. There’s been bulletins on it from GM. Guess I’ll live with it as long as it’s still showing my cars movement on the map on screen.
Hey there....I wouldn't stress about the red X.
I've had that appear maybe 30-70% of the time while owning the car since 2015, and yet the GPS still works.
Pretty sure it relates to the placement of the GPS antenna, which has a wire and plugs to the HDMI box (driver's side floorboard).
Ideally, the antenna unit should be mounted and positioned towards the upper part of the dash near the windscreen. However, it's possible it slipped (it has double-sided tape) and isn't exactly in the ideal signal location.
It's pretty tricky to get to the antenna- you may need a clothes hanger wire to fish it out if it fell from the original mounting place. A radio repair shop should be able to fix it if you aren't able to reach it. But it's really not worth the time and money just to remove the red X.
Burning Brakes thanks for info. Question… do you think GMs software update for $99 would correct connectivity or simply update infrastructure? Would not purchase if only update to roads and bridges. As I mentioned my NAV system still shows movement even though red x current. Thanks
No, the software update won't address the red X. The software update only lists slightly newer roads, bridges, points of interest, etc.
As mentioned above, it's most likely due to the physical location of the GPS antenna receiver box that plugs into the HMI unit (this is the item show at the bottom of the photo with the blue plug).
The tape on the bottom probably stopped sticking, and the antenna might have fallen lower into the dashboard just enough to cause the unit to not 100% perfectly connect the GPS signal- which creates the red X. However, the GPS should still generally work fine, even with the red X being displayed. I've learned to just ignore the red X.

I’m going to share something with you that makes me look pretty dumb on my No GPS
red X. After watching the uTube vid that Burning Brakes posted I now see how the antenna is routed. Well I use State Farm for ins and for their Drive Safely discount I placed the beacon they send you up in the left hand corner over the speaker grill loose mind you. Just sitting there. But I bet you it has been interrupting my GPS signal. Just sitting here having coffee so I haven’t tested my theory yet. But a good chance it’s been the problem. Haven’t had car long enough to know if it worked properly before I placed the beacon over the grill cover. We’ll see….
