Hey just had my oil change done at dealership. First thing I noticed when I got home. Work order says Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic was used.
I look under hood and cap says sae 0w-40 to be used.
So umm am I in trouble ?
Not at all. 5w-30 was what the factory filled the C7’s with until 2019 (I believe that year is correct).0w-40 was formulated by Mobil to allow owners to use the same viscosity for track and street. Then in 2019, Mobil posted a bulletin stating 0w-40 was acceptable in all C7’s. What year is yours?

ya I should be fine. It says mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic. How ever the oils fill dip stick shows a bit too much oil. Slight over the second hash tag! Annoying

You did allow it a few minutes to drip down and all that before checking, right? If it is slight over, I wouldn't worry. If it is way too much over, worry.
WHen asking a tech question, tell us what you have, it really helps.
What kind of 2019 do you have? Dry sump or regular? One takes 9.5 quarts the other, 6.5 quarts. One requires a special procedure to read the level of the oil, the other, ram the stick in, pull it out and read it.
According to GM dexos approved helps the cats. Not sure why it doesnt do that in Europe lol.
Not really. Dexos applies to several things, including a lower sulfur content to prevent valve deposits. The "Emissions System Protection" designation only applies to diesel engines. The levels of zinc and phosphorus (the things that hurt cats) are nearly the same as the 5w-30. Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, etc all use the European Formula 0w-40, and they don't have issues with cat failures.
Kinda gets into corporate politics. They needed a higher HTHS motor oil to be able to handle driving on street and track, but GM's Dexos 1 spec is formulated more for fuel economy. The only other spec they owned at the time was Dexos 2, which was primarily used for diesels, but it fit the requirements. Now they seem to have Dexos D for diesels and Dexos R for performance cars.
