Flying Roof
Yep, I almost did the same thing last year; started rolling before having the top completely latched down.
It's a shame your top had to be the tool to teach a serious driving lesson. Tailgating can be a bitch.
Best of luck finding your parts.
i lost a t-top in my 91 firebird and that flew off and striaght up about 40 feet at least @ 55 mph or so late at night with no one else around luckily.
it was high enough for me to look back and see it in the air spinning and land so i turned around and picked up everything I could.

Until you latch the handle, it can't be tucked away and hangs in front of your nose as a reminder.
Properly installed, it tucks behind the handle when latched, and becomes invisible.
The company is something like flyingroofs dot ---
Price is $12 but they charge nearly that much more for shipping. But it's cute enough that I bought one anyway.
If you're cheap, you can probably make it yourself.
The installation instructions are idiotic- they will have the tag visible even when everything is latched, a very bad idea. Install a little differently so the tag gets tucked out of sight behind the handle when latched.
Two things I learned from my aviation career are 1) Warnings should not be visible unless there is an actual problem, and 2) Even the sharpest people sometimes forget, the really sharp ones use reliable warnings to back up their memory.

Mdformula350 – thanks for your comments.
I realize my post may have been misunderstood.
My points in reply #2 was to acknowledge that I, like OP had made the same mistake by not fully securing my top before driving away. OP lost an expensive top for that mistake. I was lucky; I realized quickly after hearing unexpected wind noise that I had not secured the top. So I pulled over and locked it down before losing it.
My comment, "to teach a serious driving lesson" was not targeted at OP. It was meant toward the tailgating driver. It is unfortunate that OP lost the top, but the other driver could have possibly avoided striking the top had he been further away in a more defensive driving position. Thankfully no one was injured.
No offense meant toward OP. I apologize for not making my earlier comments more clear.
