Default Flying Roof

Hello Corvette Family, I recently became a member of the flying roof club leaving car show in New Jersey. Unfortunately, the car behind me "tailgating" got the worst part of it shattered windshield, creased A-pillar, and dented right fender. I suffered 2 two 1inch abrasions one on the front of roof and the other on the back. My question is. " Does anyone have the part number to the buttons that hold the inside panel sides to the interior left and right sides of the roof. There are 3 on each side. Any help / guidance would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I wish I could help you with the part numbers…

Yep, I almost did the same thing last year; started rolling before having the top completely latched down.

It's a shame your top had to be the tool to teach a serious driving lesson. Tailgating can be a bitch.

Best of luck finding your parts.

Any pics of the area you're asking about just for reference?

I couldn't find it in Alldata or on parts site but I'll bet it's one of these. There's a bunch of different sizes and it might be good to remove one of the others with a trim tool to cross check it with.

depending on wind / speed though those t-tops can get flying for sure though, sucks still someone else got involved. main key is no one was phyiscally injured, but definitely more avoidable than most things.

i lost a t-top in my 91 firebird and that flew off and striaght up about 40 feet at least @ 55 mph or so late at night with no one else around luckily.
it was high enough for me to look back and see it in the air spinning and land so i turned around and picked up everything I could.

You can pick up those little plastic parts at the hardware store. Places like Ace or True Value have a great selection of those parts. Bring one in and match the size.

There is a tag which you can attach to the driver-side roof latching handle on the removeable roof.
Until you latch the handle, it can't be tucked away and hangs in front of your nose as a reminder.
Properly installed, it tucks behind the handle when latched, and becomes invisible.
The company is something like flyingroofs dot ---
Price is $12 but they charge nearly that much more for shipping. But it's cute enough that I bought one anyway.
If you're cheap, you can probably make it yourself.

The installation instructions are idiotic- they will have the tag visible even when everything is latched, a very bad idea. Install a little differently so the tag gets tucked out of sight behind the handle when latched.
Two things I learned from my aviation career are 1) Warnings should not be visible unless there is an actual problem, and 2) Even the sharpest people sometimes forget, the really sharp ones use reliable warnings to back up their memory.

Mdformula350 – thanks for your comments.

I realize my post may have been misunderstood.

My points in reply #2 was to acknowledge that I, like OP had made the same mistake by not fully securing my top before driving away. OP lost an expensive top for that mistake. I was lucky; I realized quickly after hearing unexpected wind noise that I had not secured the top. So I pulled over and locked it down before losing it.

My comment, "to teach a serious driving lesson" was not targeted at OP. It was meant toward the tailgating driver. It is unfortunate that OP lost the top, but the other driver could have possibly avoided striking the top had he been further away in a more defensive driving position. Thankfully no one was injured.

No offense meant toward OP. I apologize for not making my earlier comments more clear.

Family I didn’t lose the roof. Yes it took flight very minor damage. Yes I felt embarrassed by not securing the roof. I appreciate all the comments

yeah no worries or issues with what you said, just saying the person may might of been tailgating perhaps just couldn't avoid it or something of that nature. I suspect not many people prepare for a flying roof panel coming for their car.
either way like said mistakes happen and no one was injured, just some pride..

OP -2 corvette points lost for flying roof

I almost became a FRC member when I had my C4. You'd THINK having to screw in four bolts would be something you wouldn't forget 😆.

Glad there were no injuries. I have heard enough of the FRC stories that I immediately latch down my roof when I reinstall it on the car. Sure do not want to join that club.
