Default Another broken valve spring Topic...

Hello Guys,
yesterday happened what we all do fear...
Was going home (around 35 mph in 4th gear) really relaxed, suddenly the car started shaking and misfiring and having a flashing CEL, immediately pulled on the side of the road, took my HP Tuner and did a diagnostic.
P0300 Random misfires, Rear Axle, Stabiltrack and IAT going crazy.
today opened up my valve cover and found what i was suspecting. 1 broken spring.
Luckily didn't dropped the valve in.
the car has been started after, except going in 7 Cyl, is running regular.
got to inspect everything by the way to search for some possible damages at rods, piston and so on.

My engine (second one) got a new LT1 crate 3 years ago, 35k Miles, regularly serviced and never abused, has yet installed from factory the Blue Springs (technically the less likely to fail, but yet happened).

You're lucky there was no other damage except the spring. Good luck with the repair.

Damn, that sucks. Guessing that since you have an HP Tuner you don't use Eco mode or AFM? Also, when you say 35K miles, is that what you got on this replacement engine? And what was the cause of the first replacement? Sorry for the questions...

Hi,
Never ever have the eco mode enabled on the new engine.
The current engine has been bought new 3 years ago, with current 35k Miles.
The first one broke down for a wrong tune, non valves related issues.

At 33,000 miles I broke a spring while driving 70 MPH down the highway with nowhere to pull over ...... needless to say the resulting carnage resulted in a new motor being installed under warranty ..... New motor has never been run in 4-cylinder mode but now that I am close to 60,000 on the car, I am worried about spring breakage ...... I drive my car every chance i get and also abuse it ..... thinking about installing a new set of springs

My ‘16 Stingray broke a spring at 60,000 miles and trashed the engine. My Corvette mechanic (former GM tech) installed a new LT1 crate motor and suggested replacing valve springs at 50,000 miles if using GM springs. Go with aftermarket performance springs and don’t worry about them.

That's sucks.
By aftermarket you mean the ones with double spring? Those technictechnically prevent 100% the possibility of a valve drop?

So how much would it cost to have the springs swapped. I know labor is hard to adjust for but round about price. Also what springs do you guys recommend. May just do this before warranty expires in 2027.

Not necessarily double springs (although that would certainly help) but springs from a known performance supplier, not from GMs lowest bidder.

My guy quoted about $500.00 but that’s using GM springs.

Use the weakest quality spring and a non aggressive cam to help the valvetrain lifespan.

That just suxs! But my reason why I will sell my C7 in about 2 more years, before the warranty runs out. I don't want to own a C7 without a warranty.
I'll enjoy it while I can.

I have not had a warranty since 2020 ..... can't worry about it or you will never enjoy the car , if you compare the amount of problems by the amount of cars built .... the percentages are low . There are plenty of 100,000 mile C7's

Not with my C7 but I did have an intake valve spring break on my 2005 SSR (LS2) at around 40k miles. Fortunately the valve didn’t drop and the repair was around $350 (2014 price). 👍🏻

Default Side Question

When replacing valve springs with performance springs, is there any tuning required?

Thanks in advance for your replies.
