Just noticed this in the last few months, so I don’t know how long it’s been that way. Disconnect between the digital reading of oil temperature versus the sweep gauge. Anyone else ever experienced this?
Guys, the first pic is the dash in Touring mode, second in Sport. So looking at the first, Touring mode, the coolant and oil temps on the digital center panel show 195 and 199 respectively. The gauge in lower right shows 220. There is a difference of approx 20 degrees F either way, unless my old eyes are failing me again.....
The data comes from the ECM in digital format and needs to be converted to an analog voltage to be shown on the analog gauge. Analog gauges like the one in the lower corner of the IP are just voltmeters that have different markings and calibrations. The conversion process has some errors so the analog gauge may or may not represent the actual data that was sent to the IP. The pocket gauges are handled differently since they are part of the display panel and probably formed and driven by a software subroutine that moves it per the digital data sent to it.
Thx Bill. A bit amazing that an analog gauge can have a 10% error, at least in this case.
No gauge in a car is going to be extremely accurate as there is no need for the accuracy or the added expense required to achieve that accuracy. The post that mentioned that mentioned the 2014 gauge error didn't mention how they fixed it. Since the conversion can be a combination of hardware and software they may have only needed to change a software calibration or if not possible to do that just change the label on the gauge so the needle is pointed at a different number without changing its position.
