So now you see why Faraday bags are useless for a C7 .....the key nor the car transmits anything until u initiate it

so this car can only be stolen if someone tails you and hangs out basically right next to you to copy it, then of course either finds out where you live or tails you again to wait for you to leave the car.
got it.

No, not the only way. An additional key fob can be added and used, or the car could be towed away.

I'd only bother parking overnight in a public area.
That's not feasible. Go the gym and pull a fuse? Go to the grocery store and pull a fuse? Stop for ice cream and pull a fuse?

If I lived in an area where I'd be concerned about my C7 getting stolen just doing regular life things I wouldn't own a C7 (or even live there, if that was a viable choice).

I suspect they were able to program a new key with access to the ODB2 port and the correct tool to plug it in.

I'm trying to understand exactly what they did. If they copied the key fob, they wouldn't need to break the window. They broke the rear side widow, then what? Use a stick to unlock the door? Then what?

Yep , i am willing to bet that most are not stolen on the day that the signal is grabbed. We see alot taken out of parking garages or hotels where the thief knows when the car is there

Not sure why they did that either , maybe they had a obd tool that can jailbreak the ECM, you can see all these tools being openly sold on TEMU .....

I went out in the garage and was looking at what I possibly could reach thru a broken hatch
window. It measures about 24 inches to the emergency drivers door release in the hatch area.
If I stick my arm in the open drivers door with the hatch open, I can just reach back and stick
my fingers around the hatch seal. That is also about 24 inches, so I am thinking that somebody
that knows their way around the C7 that after breaking the quarter window they can reach in,
pull the emergency drivers door release and there in. But, shouldn't the alarm go off when the
door opens?
So, if the goal is to get to the OBD port, what if I put a fake OBD port in place of the real one?
If I get a similar looking port and hook up the power and ground wires but not the CAN bus wires,
and hide the real OBD port behind the kick panel, maybe this would frustrate a thief enough to walk?

What other defensive measure are owners taking?

Pull the starter fuse, Hide the OBD port, remove the 2 screws.

It may not be much, but I do have a steering club lock and use it when I go grocery shopping all the time. I lock the long side between the seat and storage area, so its hard to remove. Anything to add more minutes or struggle.

A club will not stop a pro , a can of freon is all they need to spray the lock and then they smack it .....

This problem is not new , 20 years ago they would pop a lock or break the steering columns . If they want it bad enough they will back up to it with a tow truck and just ****** it

Just insure it .... then just drive it and stop worrying , I had and still have a lot of really nice desirable cars ....and I drive every one of them . My AMG has 41,000 and my C7 has 62,000. My previous C6 had 70,000 enjoyable miles and before someone says I live in the country ... no I live in the metro Atlanta area and even drive both into the city and on business trips
You can't live your life worrying about if someone is going to steal your car ... and it's a waste to leave them sit in the garage ...

I they have an obd device to start the car they're prepared with whatever tools they need to reach in from the rear window.

Re: the decoy obd ... can you wire it in a way that will fry their device? High amps through pins that aren't supposed to be powered? Just remember to tell the techs before service ....

Or they cut the actual steering wheel. Many cars with clubs have been stolen; thieves leave them on the street in place of the car.

I only knew of one person who used the club and she drove a 1992 Corolla in minneapolis. The joke is that he club was worth more than the car so they would likely take the club and leave the car!

I'm with you on insurance and enjoyment.

UGH, sorry for your loss (times 2, which really F'ing sucks).

And then people wonder why some cars stay garage queens. A road trip is the perfect way to use the car and celebrate what it meant to you... and then. ...

I hope it's found and in decent shape for you.

Keep us posted.

In a previous car I wired in a hidden rocker switch from the ignition cylinder in the wire for the starter relay. Keys unlocked the car, insert, dash lights up - and no crank, ever. Switch was hidden in the passenger seat frame, easy for me to reach around under there, hard to find unless they knew what to look for.
Would not stop a flatbed of course

Still no word at this point. I’m still holding out hope that it’s found and not too far gone. I do know that if the outcome is bad, I won’t be replacing it with another one. I could easily do so, but for me it wasn’t about Corvette ownership. It was about THAT Corvette. As much as I really loved the car, I’m a Ford guy. Have been since the height of the Fox body Mustangs.

Two weeks before he passed away he told me he was leaving me the car and that he wanted me sell it to buy my dream car (2020 GT 500). I told him not in a million years would I sell his car, but it looks like our little conversation may play out the way he requested

Here she was the very last time I seen her. 2016 Z51 with full Exhaust and a Magnuson 2650.

The next morning she was gone.
