I've been having an issue with my Center event when I have my AC on high, where after 10 seconds, the vent just slams itself shut. Being out in the Phoenix Sun, this 110+ degree heat already is killing me, and 115+ is right around the corner. The vent pointing at me on the center side makes a massive difference when keeping cool. Does anyone know of a way to tighten it up? I'm hoping I don't have to find a used one from a wrecking yard or something and then tear my dash out to install and hope it doesn't do the same same thing.
I used to have this same issue, and I fixed it several years ago using a small piece of black electrical tape.
You can't see the tape unless you are squinting and looking for it. 100% solves the problem.
I have the same problem and live in Phx. The black tape won't work because it won't hold in this heat. Only when I have it on high, I will push the vent to aim all the way down. That seems to hold it straight. I also have air going to my head and feet for two reasons. It helps the vent from shutting AND it provides cool air for the seat fans. Search the forum since there are many posts. You can always buy a new vent and replace it but it involves removing the the dash face.

I currently live in Tennessee. It was 98 degrees here the other day. I had the fan speed on maximum with upper vents only, and the tape held perfectly fine, just like it's been doing 9+ years.
You aren't doing it correctly if it's not holding for you. Requires stacking of about 2-3 layers of tape to make a bump large enough to prevent the vent from shutting.
Replacing the vents will not help since new vents will have this exact same problem. My car had this issue from brand new, and the dealership was unable to fix it. They claimed it was a known "flaw" and to operate the fan at lower speeds.

I live in Phoenix as well, and yes electrical tape / vinyl tape and really most tapes will not work. 98° is a spring day for us. Right now at my house it's reaching 113 114° during the day and in the car that means it's about 160+. And really the adhesive on damn near any tape just melts and turns to a goo. And it makes an absolute mess especially with electrical tape in the summertime. Glad to know that I'm not the only person with this issue. I have a 2016 and so mine was after the refresh of the digital systems (where the added Apple Car play Android Auto and move things like the USB ports/sdcard location/s some other items as I've done my research) which I think happened in early 2016 models, where mine was a end of year 2016 that was built in November 2016.
I'll likely see about using a piece of thin cardboard like from a soda box or something and slide it in there. It sounds like even if I replace the vent I'm going to end up with the exact same issue. One thing I thought about is drawing up a clip in Fusion 360 and 3D print some kind of clip that could sit beside it or straddle the adjuster pad. So it holds it in place when going side to side rather than just the one side where it wants to shut when the air is on.
I don't know if I want to do something like the C7 logo as the face of it or something, or some other idea. I want to do something that looks decent and doesn't look like it's just there to hold the vent. I have a C7 Corvette and it feels like I'm driving a 73 Gremlin with tape holding parts together, lol. I'll design something that basically has a tight fit and will snugly go around the air deflector/thumb adjuster. I'll post the files after for anyone that wants to print one off, or if anyone likes it and doesn't have a printer, I can work with to send one.

...more to come....
You nailed it. The glue will just melt and make a mess. Me engine and oil temps when I get in the car, in an insulated garage, are already above 100 degrees. Parking anywhere for 30 minutes will increase it to 150+ with sunshades. There are many threads on here of people replacing the vent and it fixing the problem. There are also other solutions people came up with on their own. You should probably read them. I've just never had enough motivation to worry about it for now. Like I said, with the air diverted partly to my feet it provides cooler air for my seat fans.
I like your idea of a small black clip. Some people use air fresheners, but I don't want that.
