Default Windshield

Morning All,

I just purchased a 2015 Z51 M7 with 6k miles from my father; what a wonderful car! Unfortunately, I just noticed a crack on the windshield that wasn't there last time I used it. It's completely smooth, doesn't feel at all like broken glass. Anybody have this happen before? Should I get the windshield replaced? Thanks for your insight!

Bart

That's a strange looking crack. Almost looks like a stress crack. I'd definitely get it replaced. Your insurance should cover it.

Thanks for your thoughts Ramets! The top had never been removed during my Dad's 9 years of ownership; I took it off immediately. I wonder if that had something to do with it?

We have a much smaller crack in precisely the same area on our 2016 rag top. We recall similar cracks reported on C7 convertibles; and assumed it had something to do with the raising/lowering of the top. Apparently not...

Ours has been there a while but is not (presently) large enough to notice without close inspection.

We trudge on.

There have been a number of posts of cracks like that. As others have said, check your insurance. Mine replaced the windshield on my C5, due to a large chip, at no cost to me.

Common problem. Sometimes it delaminates and sometimes it just cracks without the feel of a real crack.

It goes back to some alignment tabs that GM used during the assembly and the tabs cause stress on the glass.

Best to remove or clip those tabs off when the windshield is being replaced.

I have something similar on mine but no crack. Just delamination along the edge.

I had something similar to my last C7 3 years ago as well and the insurance declined to pay for it. They called it a defect.

Yes, I would seem to have the windshield replaced.

Here is a picture of my windshield, after I herd something hit it on I-10 in Florida. It looks a lot like yours.

That leaf pattern on the driver's side is definitely worth it. I'd want to keep the glass if possible.

I noticed a small amount of delamination on the upper passenger corner on my '16. Instead of dealing with the windshield replacement, when I had the car PPF'd last summer the installer applied a small strip of vinyl across the top. If the issue goes beyond that strip I'll have the windshield replaced.

Considering, that could land in my face and lap, if it decided to let go while I was driving, I would err on the side of caution, and replace it. jmho

I had a similar, but much smaller (4") crack develop on my 2014 Z51 a few months after I bought it. It is in upper left corner and cannot be seen from inside as the inside window trim covers it. The outer is glass is definitely NOT cracked; it is smooth. Either the inner glass or just the interlayer has split /cracked. I believe it was structural. Since it is not a result of an accident, I do not believe insurance will cover, I'm leaving it for now.
