My '17 GS manual describes the following settings in Settings > Display > Mode:
- The Auto setting adjusts the screen background automatically depending on the exterior lighting conditions.
- The Day setting brightens the map background.
. The Night setting darkens the map background.
The Auto setting is availalble in my car. The two map brightness settings are not. However, those options are available from the Nav display. From an old thread:
With the Nav screen showing;
Menu;
Map View;
Day/Night Mode:
Day Mode: Brightens the map background.
Night Mode: Darkens the map background.
Automatic: Adjust the screen background automatically depending on the exterior lighting conditions.

I normally drive with the top down. I wear a ball cap to keep the light out of the area between my forehead and sunglasses. I parked, put the top up, and tossed the hat on the dashboard. Something, I do not normally do. I went into the market.
When, I got back to the car, I started the Vette, put the top down, and realized the dashboard and infotainment system were dark. They were lit up when I turned the engine off.
I wondered what was wrong, then I thought I was glad I had an extended warranty. I was sitting there with dark screens and wondering what I was going to do next.
Fortunately, I thought, "I think I read somewhere in the manual that there was a light sensor on the dashboard." Then, I saw my hat on the dashboard. As soon as I grabbed my hat, the lights came back on.
Other than feeling like a dummy, all was well.

I know my aging eyes don’t help but my 2019 Silverado at 50% is brighter than the Vette at 100%….
