Default Gauges Stopped working properly

I searched and found an old thread that provided me with this pic but no real answer to the issue. The old thread was about a manual C7, mine is an auto, but the problem appears to be the same. Auto detailer left the doors open while cleaning the car and battery went dead. I used a hotshot to get it started and back into the garage, then put a low amp (2) charger on it for six hours. Removed the charger and the car started fine, but the gauges would not work properly. The pic seems to be the default no matter what I do try and change it. Pressing the left button on the right steering wheel controls, moving up and down the options then pressing the right button just returns to the pic above. Can't even access the settings. I had radio issues with the first battery which was going bad so I thought that was what was going on in this instance. I replaced the battery but when I started it, the problem was not resolved. I was hoping someone has run across this issue and resolved it before I schlepp it over to the Chevrolet dealer for a diagnosis. Anyone else run into this?

Not sure what your problem is. Have you selected which display mode or theme you want? To do that make sure the left button is highlighting the left column of the display so you can see Info, Performance, Audio, Navigation and Settings at the bottom (if you don't see that column click the left arrow several times to make sure it is displayed),

Once you have those choices Select Settings, then follow the directions in the picture below to choose whichever display mode you want.

The pic shows what I get no matter what screen I go to. When I press the left arrow to get the other options, I scroll down to any of the other options (info, performance, etc.), press the right button to presumably access that option and the screen in the pic is the only thing available. Scrolling up or down from that screen does nothing.

No idea what the cause of the issue is, but hope you can figure it out soon and the solution is not an expensive one.

OP,

Your battery is suspect if it died that quickly...

You will lose window indexing and possibly radio presets, seat memory, and display settings depending how long the car is without power. I would personally run through all of the settings menus at some point once you have a known good battery.

You are in Sport mode (S in box at bottom center of DIC) with a Sport mode display. Does the display layout change when you turn the rotary **** on the console to select Tour or TRack mode? If not, your display is locked in Sport mode. You need to set display mode to Link to Drive Mode or choose the display mode that you prefer.

- using the right thumb buttons: Scroll left, then up/down to settings. Press OK. You should then be in the center.
- scroll up/down to Display Theme - scroll right
- select Tour, Sport, Track, or Link as desired. Press OK. You should be in the center.
- scroll to the left and up/down to Info or Perf. Press OK. You should be back in the center.
- scroll up/down until you find a sub display you like
- if in Tour personality you can scroll right and choose pocket gauges

Have fun exploring your display choices!

Ron

Control, Alt, Del.

The car is one big computer.

After the battery is fully charged, with the neg cable removed, reconnect cable. This will reset all your computers.

Do the easy stuff first.

Is the thin, black wire still attached to the ground clamp on the battery? It can sometimes break off when messing with a battery.

So when you choose Settings and move the Cursor to the right you never see anything but the digital speedo in the very center of the display no matter how many times you push the up or down arrows? . What part of the display do you want to change?

You may need to use a scan tool and see if there are any codes that address the issue. An OBD2 scanner won't cut the mustard as you need to see the body codes that are specific to GM cars. Errors that show up in features outside of the engine/ABS may not have any warning indicator other than the feature doesn't work. There are a lot of body codes that can't be seen by anything other than a full-featured scanner.

Here is a video showing reconfiguration of the display:

If you can't change the digital speedo reading to some other feature by using the up and down arrows you may have a problem with the switch itself. Switches are some of the least reliable electronic devices so you may need to replace a switch. I am including the diagnostic process that should be used to check the switches.

Ensure your +12V and GND battery connections are good and there is a proper +12V level being delivered to the steering wheel.

Hope this helps.

As has been suggested here and in other threads: "It's the battery, dummy!" As stated previously, I replaced the battery but when I started the car back up, I was still getting the generic speedometer with just the temp gauge and the oil pressure gauge. I know that with another "electronic wonder" vehicle that is run almost entirely from the radio (computer), the changes don't always happen right away. Something about rebooting overnight or something like that. Way over my head. But I did wait and when I started it this morning, the settings weren't where I had them before the battery issue, but I was able to reset everything back to the way I had it.
The last time I had a battery issue the radio would fade in and out and the alt gauge was fluctuating but otherwise the car started fine and ran fine. It ain't like the old days when if the battery was dying, the car just wouldn't start anymore.
But thanks for all the helpful suggestions and now I'll wait to see what weird stuff the car will do the next time the battery needs replacing.

Glad to hear it's all good now!
By the way, the car has a timer so if the doors are left open it will turn off the lights after about 10 minutes.

Settings don't reset in the relatively short time it takes to replace a battery. But I'd expect them to reset to factory defaults if the battery was disconnected/dead for a long period of time.
