Pro, how are you bypassing 1st gear?. When i put my 2018 in M it downshifts all the way to 1st gear.
If you are stopped, you can select M and then use the paddles to upshift to 2 while still stopped.
Be aware that if you move forward a bit and then stop, the car will go back into 1. You can then upshift to 2 again while stopped, but that gets to be a PITA.

Yes,,,, any time you shift from auto to manual, it will be in 1st gear. This should only happen when you start out the first time. The rest of the time, while driving there isn't any reason to move the shifter out of manual mode. It will down shift to 2 gear every time you stop. I creep forwards all the time, it never shifts back down to first.
Only reason to downshift is for acceleration out of the corner. Brakes for slowing down, not the transmission. No reason for Corvette brakes to get soft especially street driving if they are maintained properly. So no reason to need engine braking.
So other than coming out of a corner and wanting acceleration, pretty much seems like there isn't a reason for playing with the paddles?

Thank you. I had a Jaguar XKR and when you used their mode like M, (maybe S, I don't recall) it automatically changed all the points of adjustable suspension and stiffened the steering I believe, but it still shifted automatically. But, as soon as you touched the paddel then you had to use them up. It shifted down by paddle or automatically.
Downshifting with the paddles on an A8 is a waste of time it justs revs the engine without slowing you down you can drop 2or3 gears at a time without much results. I miss my C6 auto with the 3:42 rear gears I had installed never had to use the brakes on downgrades
I drive the car in sport mode and use my brakes like what they were made for . After that I let the car do the rest for me . Atran repair will cost a lot more then new brake pads

[QUOTE=Gearhead Jim;1608628469]Can your tell us what went wrong with your tranny, and at what miles?
Nice to know what is happening to others...
The dealer told me the computer stored a code the transmission was hot. They are performing a triple flush and replacing the harness which includes a new heat sensor. My friend who was with me the second time, and is a transmission specialist, said he doubted the transmission was overheated as we were driving 50 MPH when the gas disengaged and we slowed to a complete stop. The gas pedal had absolutely no response. When we stopped I put the trans in neutral, pressed the gas pedal and it revved. Then placed it in gear and away we went. Everything was now normal, and I drove around 60 miles to the dealer. This was Saturday and the Corvette Mechanic was not there. I drove home and returned on Monday. around 40 miies. This was the second time this occured. The first time being in the morning after backing out of garage into street. The gas pedal was inoperable and I idled two houses down the street where I stopped. put in neutral and stepped on gas pedal. It then worked. No engine light came on either time.
As it is not logical for the transmission to have overheated in either event we feel this was a false code. As far as the repair is concerned this will be the second triple flush. Is there a way to find out if this has happened to someone else?
Thanks for the update.
Were you able to look at the tranny temperature on the DIC when this was happening? Or some other times to see what your temp normally runs?
On our 2017 Z51 A8, normal street driving leaves the tranny temp so cool that it's hard to read on the analog gauge. Autocrossing or track time can heat it up. I believe the Z51 has better cooling for the diff and tranny, but for street use that should be irrelevant.
