Hello everyone, I have a 2016 stingray with just under 10,000 miles on it, with magnetic Ride. I was wondering out there if anyone could give me directions as far as what the full cost would be for strut replacements on all four corners if you have had them replaced. Also if they're leaking, and obviously it would be how bad they're leaking, how serious is this to drive when they're leaking like that? Thanks everyone for responding, I really appreciate the feedback on the forum I have received in the past.
Around 47 thousand threads on this. 2 or 3 within the last week. Those have all the info you need about leakage and all the opinions therein.
As for cost...
- If you have a dealer do it and pay dealer MSRP for parts. Figure $4k parts and labor, +/-$1k depending on where you're located and if the dealer gives you book time or "gotta have it" pricing.
- If you look around you can find the OEM shocks online for ~$600 each, give or take a couple hundred. Your labor is whatever you think it's worth.
Does it hurt to drive on them? Puttering around on the street and going to a car show......Not really. Canyon carving or heading to the race track? I'd certainly think twice about it. Bad **shocks** (you don't have struts) ultimately take their toll on the transverse spring, the bushings, and the sway bar end links.
Thanks, for responding guys just took it in for new tires and coolant flush ( original coolant 2016 ).Anyways mechanic who is the dedicated Corvette specialist, that's all he works on at the dealership. He said he would rate the two in the front a 6 1/2 out of 10 on a concern level of 1 to 10. Seemed like a good guy, actually came out to talk to me for 10/15 minutes about the car in general and answer my list of questions I wrote on paper for him and gave me his opinion of the car when I came to pick it up 🤯and it's condition in general ,said I had a pretty good one from his inspection 😊 The car only has 9800 miles on it but he said sometimes the struts can leak because the car is not driven a lot thus seals becoming a little dried out. I will look for myself with the leakage chart that was submitted ( thanks very helpful 👍 Thanks everyone for the feedback. Appreciate 👍
One other thought for you. When you look at them yourself, wipe them off completely dry. Then look again in a couple of months. I am thinking that a given amount of oil trace that took 9 years to accumulate is a lot less of a worry than the same amount that took 3 months to accumulate.
Our 2017 Z51 Mag Ride had 2 shocks that definitely needed replacement at 2 yr/20k miles for leaks, and 2 more that were marginal. Dealer replaced all 4 under warranty, now at 7 yrs/60k miles they are still good.
Will the leakage appear as like vegetable oil, wet, or will it be more like someone misted the strut housing ? I wiped mine down after inspecting them with a clean white shop towel. I found no oil per say that I could identify as oil just a dry black residue, if I had to describe it I would say more powder like, more of like a grime. I will check them after a couple weeks and go from there, the shock leakage illustration posted was very helpful, thanks for posting it. I guess my question is, is it a noticable dripping oil like vegetable oil or is it more like if you misted the strut housing with oil? Again thanks everyone for responding. Appreciated. Great site great people 👍
The shock you pictured appears to just have road grime on it and a small film of oil. If the car was under warranty, more likely than not the dealer would refuse warranty coverage. If after a few weeks it looks like that again then yes, it should be changed.
The oil will look like traditional motor oil, sometimes with a grayish tinge although road grime can cause it to look darker. When the shock is really blown, it will have a gray paste coming from it. MRC shocks are filled with a fluid filled with iron particles. It has the consistency of a paste but since oil is part of the recipe, that's why you see dampness when there's a leak.
People end up with the wrong parts because they refuse to call them the correct name.
GM expects the shock absorbers to leak. Here is how much they say is acceptible and how much isn't:
Does the source of that diagram specify whether those standards apply to Mag Ride shocks only, or ordinary shocks only, or both?
Is the diagram directly from GM, or an outside source?

My understanding is that this chart is for the mag ride shocks only. I've been wrong before. However, I'm rating my chances on this one at 88%+
Thanks for responding, yes after wiping them down, cleaning them off I will monitor each one and check them every two weeks and go from there. Thanks everyone. 😊👍
