Are the wires from and to the skip shift cable nearer to the driver or passenger side of the vehicle. I have no lift and will have to wriggle under the car install the new cable.

The connector is on the drivers side of the transmission. No need for a lift. I did it on my C5 and C7 with jack stands. A lift would make it much easier but it's totally doable on jack stands.
There's plenty of videos on Youtube showing where it's located and how to install. Below is just one of the many videos.
Notably, there's a similar looking, slightly easier to reach connection that will accept the CAGS Eliminator, but installing it there prevents the transmission from going into Reverse.

On our C6 and our C5, the 1-4 shift was not an issue. After a very short time you automatically gave enough gas to stop it from engaging. If you shift around 2,000rpms, you’re fine.

Correct, the CAGS is a waste of money. Skip shift only occurs under light throttle conditions (heavy traffic) between 14 and 19 mph. Shift before or after the speed window and never run into skip shift or be aggressive on the throttle. Check the OM to see how it works and train yourself to avoid it. It happens to me every now and then but that is usually because I am not paying attention to how slow the cars in front of me are moving.

I agree in principle...my buddy who has had a C4 for decades never bothered to install it on his M6. I did on my C5 and now my C7 - for the negligible cost I'm happy not to have to think about the skip shift ever.

For the 5 times I think its popped up on my dash because I mistakenly tried to shift going between 15-20 while in traffic it was worth it. I don't like ever being told what to do.

IF you don't have any way to lift your car, you could drive it up a driveway with 2 wheels on 1 side on the curb, parallel to the street, to get 1 side up.
On the c6's, removing or shorting a fuse would disable this. I wonder if this would also work on a c7?
