Default Question on PDR

Could you tell me if you have to start the PDR all over when you stop the car ? My C8 allowed you to continue recording until the drive was full. This one ( 2018) doesn't seem to want to continue recording

Thanks for any help

Yes you have to re-start it every time you shut the car off.

I tested this. On my 2019 I shut off the car wait for a little bit of time and then restarted it and a PDR continue to record. There is no gaps.

So yes and no. I have run my PDR at Talladega every year at a veterans event. If you just turn the car off and have to jump right back in and restart, you would say it will not stop recording. It continues a brief time after you turn the engine off, even after you exit the car and close the door, unless you stop it.

it will stop recording after about 45s or so and you must restart the PDR for the next run after ignition. I'm sure someone knows the exact time.

Whether the PDR will continue to record may depend on the year of the car, as the OM descriptions are slightly different and whether you are using the performance mode or the valet mode. The 2015 supposedly offers a Teen Driving Mode but I have never noticed it with my PDR since I only use the performance mode while on track. The 2015 and 2016 OMs don't mention that the video will be lost if the power is turned off, however, the 2019 OM sort of does.

What I do know from personal experience with my 2015 is that the PDR will continue to record as long as the power remains on. That means you I can stop the car, turn off the engine and it will continue to record for about 10 minutes, as long as I don't open the door. As soon as I open the door, the retained accessory power shuts off and the PDR stops, resulting in a bad file. The PDR recording must be stopped before power is turned off or else the file will be unreadable.

There are numerous posts about this happening going back 8 or 9 years. I have never used Valet Mode but I suspect it would require the file to be readable through multiple power off and on sequences or it wouldn't provide a record of what happens when you trust your car to a shop or an actual valet. Same goes for the maybe Teen Driving Mode on the 15s.

From the 2019 OM:

With the highlighted statement, it looks like the PDR file would still be fine when turning off the power as long as the SD card isn't removed from the slot. However, some people's experience, including mine, indicates that just shutting off the power is enough to corrupt the file.

Bill
Just for the fun I just tried shutting off my 19' while recording and then pulled the sd out, I did not open the door, the file was fine. I do know for a fact as Vader mentioned it does record for about 30-45 seconds after shutting and exiting car because I have seen myself numerous times walking into stores on the PDR recordings.
