Is it just the small handheld model? It should be self-contained and not need a Windows based PC unless you want to take advantage of the software updates. I have an Autel MK808s that I have used a lot. The 329 should be nice enough to get the basics out of your car since it will be able to pull the codes you need for basic troubleshooting. You'll end up asking about codes here since there is a ton of knowledge with the members. I think I will have to pay $120 or so in 2026 to renew my updates, but I have used it so much for family/friend's cars that it is worth it to me. Scanners are awesome.
Check out some youtubes on the model you have and it will give a great start.
The Autel 329 is a $30.00 code reader which is not Windows or Apple only…your friend probably doesn’t know anything about this code reader. either…doubt it will show you anything more than Powertrain trouble codes…not much help if you really need to diagnose a car…it doesn’t diagnose the car for you…you will have to figure out what’s wrong.
