I have a 2107 Z06 and I am having trouble getting the emissions sensors to register. It is stock and the catalytic and o2 sensor will not read as ready I am in Galveston county Texas. They say drive it and that is2what I’ve done. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
If you have an automatic and some sort of range device it can keep the monitors from setting. As I recall, the o2 monitors take multiple cycles to set.
Good luck w/ that drive procedure. You need a test track w/ no other cars on it. Just drive, it will eventually set. But why are they not set now? Was there some work done previously?
The drive procedure as specified in the Service Manual for any task is the "minimum conditions" in which to set something. If a tech needs to check something quickly and wants something to learn or a test to run in minimum time that's what the drive procedure is for. It is not the only conditions for which a test runs or something learns.
If you drive around long enough you will inherently meet the conditions of the test and things will work. This is how all things are. There are lots of things (not just emissions) that your can needs to learn or do. For example coolant needs to reach a certain temp by a certain time after the car is on. TPMS need to report back correct values within a specific time or else they get marked invalid. There are others but those are the most common non-emission ones on the C7.
In the 40 years of owning about 35 GM vehicles and working on them my entire life, I have never done any special procedures to get my cars in ready status. I just drove them. In the case of my Z06 it only sees about 100 miles a month so I just drove it as my daily for 2 days and poof!! Ready!
If you recently replaced your battery or had work done on your car where any codes were reset or the ECM was refreshed, all of the emission monitors would have been reset. Normal driving will eventually get them all set to ready, meaning that the associated monitor has run and passed. Some monitors require that other monitors have run and are now ready. For example, the O2 monitor must be ready before the catalyst will run. All monitors have various requirements that must be met before the monitor will run, thing like coolant temp, RPM, vehicle speed, and so on, hence the drive cycles that can help get all monitors to show ready sooner. Also, if you have a Range device, or other OBD port device plugged in that prevents 4-cylinder operation, this will prevent the vehicle from being ready. If this is the case, unplug the device and drive. Also, if the check engine light is on, the monitors will not run. Of course, if the light is on, the car will fail.
